The Jeep J8, built in a plant in Egypt, is a long wheelbase version of the Wrangler, with leaf springs in back supporting a small pickup bed, and powered by a 2.8L VM Motori diesel (295 lb-ft of torque).

the vehicle was designed for military use, but the public's response has been positive, and Jeep decided to put it on sale in Europe, the Middle East, and South America. In other words, everywhere but here!

Hope springs eternal, so maybe we'll see some version of the J8 on US soil in the future. It would make a great foundation for an expo vehicle like the Earthroamer XV-JP.

It continues to amaze me that nobody will release a small diesel utility vehicle when they would not even need to put that much extra work in to it. You would think someone would catch on to the fact that diesel swaps are huge right now and people will pay money for it.

All I know is that I would love to get my hands on one of those, I have been watching to see if they will be available to any public. I might have to move to SA just so I can get one. Then I can get that Hilux I have always dreamed about too!:sombrero:

There was an article in one of the big four wheeler magazines last month with the J8 Sarge as it's cover article. Seems that the Dodge Skunk Works got to import 2 into the US for R&D. I was very impressed by it. Way cool ride, I wish they would import them here.

wow that is cool...
would it really be that far off from our current emissions standards..
I agree with another poster that you need to pass on your thoughts to your political leaders and to Jeep...
Emails, phone calls, prove how bad you want it...oh and I am going away to write emails now.

Well, just to put a positive spin on it...

By the time we can import a military surplus one (25 years) there should be a bountiful supply of parts world-wide.

I know, I really had to reach for that one.

Call your congresspersons about emissions regulations.
Why? Euro emisions regs are just as stringent as our new regs are... there's something else going on here.

I have to respectfully disagree. Europe has a diesel option in nearly all models, and none of them can be shipped over here without expensive modifications. Same with gas. I subscribe to Car & Driver and every month they have all the new and future cars featured and the editors and I are both disappointed when many of the European models don't make it over here, mostly due to California Emissions standards. (california is like 40% of the US new car market)

Mercedes only just this month made their 3.0 Diesel 50 state approved.

I'm a CD reader as well as a big time auto-nut, and the fact is that these " extensive mods" Do NOTHING to the car that is truly nessescary. CARB's standards are not as stringent as the new EURO10 (?) standards... So why would it be dificult to bring the car here? the Answer? Beuracracy.
