JB1RDS B190 Build (it's gonna be slow) of Henry!!

My EGR was bad and I had vacuum leaks as well. Fixing them made it run better, but didn't entirely fix the problem. If you do the EGR, order the connector pipe, too--there is a 99% chance it will break while trying to remove the valve.

I also did the plug wire re-route to avoid crossfire (there is a tech bulletin on it).

I have most all the cheap and should be done anyway on a 20 YO vehicle. Took it to a really good old mechanic that has been ford certified since forever including the original diagnostic computers. He is still stumped.

Shocker

VanDOOM!
Jb1rd, get the transmission serviced and go from there. It is not that expensive and it will confirm yes or no. It will need it after sitting.

I was able to confirm from the previous owner that the tranny had been serviced in 2011 but he did not know if it was a full service with the pan dropped, TC drained and filter replaced, so I have an appointment at a highly recommended trans shop for Tues. I guess it is a wait and see game now:mad: hoping for the best. He also let me know that the radiator had been flushed at that time as well, I am sure he mentioned all this to me but to be honest I think I was day dreaming about the 4x conversion, ADD :)

Update****Drove the van this morning to get it registered and played with driving it more in a manual style, (using 1st and 2nd rasther than just Drive)it does make a difference. I narrowed it down to right at 40mph at cruising speed in Drive, 40 mph in 2nd does not do it. However, after putting another bottle of Sea Foam and filling up with 90 octane ethanol free, the hiccup/shutter/jerk what have you seemed to be noticeably decreased :) I am cautiously optimistic that it just needs to be finessed and quirks discovered in a 20 year old vehicle.

Hey Cecile, what did the ECM/U upgrade take care of or supposed to take care of when you sent it off? After more testing and adding "Shudder Stop" just to see if it did anything, which was a definite no. I am beginning to wonder if it is a computer thing. The sensation is now more of a "thud" and reproduce able at 40 and 45mph especially when using cruise control, but also just driving and ONLY at cruising rpm, never under load. So if I accelerate past 40-5 nothing. I have not had it on the freeway to test highway speeds. ***edit----it does it at highway speeds 55-65 but seems less abrupt/distinct/sever. Not sure what to think if I vary the rpm just slightly it does not do it****scratching head, not sure what to do, I do not know how changing the trans fluid/filter will change this?

Jason: What got me thinking about the ECM was reading the thread at this link: http://b190.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=102&p=1237#p1237 which describes others forum members' problems with the '94 B190 (both engines) that included jerky, intermittent missing, coughing, stalling--all of which were claimed to be resolved (after trying a lot of things that did not help) by either a new or repaired ECM. I was encouraged enough by reading this thread that I thought it might fix my intermittent problem--stalling. However, my stalling was not resolved by the ECM upgrade (which, unbeknownst to me, was taken care of by some P.O.) because what I had was a failing fuel pump. No more stalling after replacing the fuel pump... So, my problem was completely different than yours. My problem left me far, far from civilization more than once. At least they were scenic places. But, like you, I was baffled and trying things that did not fix the problem, because, like you, I had an intermittent problem. Hate those!

To get the real answer to what the ECM software upgrade is supposed to improve and if it might help you, it's probably best for you or your mechanic to contact one of the reman board shops and discuss your symptoms and the things you've already tried with them. Or, you could try to contact one of the posters from the thread I linked. Unfortunately, these members haven't been heard from for a while. Maybe try a PM.

BTW, my van's cruise control was always really quirky...until I replaced the transmission. Now it's fine.

I hope you learn something helpful from the trip to the tranny shop. Keep us posted!

Not a huge amount of progress but some. It's amazing how dated and old mannish the old side skirts made it look. Defeated by ease and opportunity I settled for putting the privy back in its original locale. It is a lot better without the shower/tub in the way. Mocked up a temp outside shower to see if it will be utilized enough to warrant an actual shower box and replumb. Still have slight hesitation and or hiccup at cruise speed but noticeably better after the tune up. Found out the tranny was serviced by the last owner before his big trip as was the cooling system and new brakes and tires put on. Gonna pull the ECM and send it off for the rebuild/software update. Growing fonder of this unruly beast 😁

PCM off for repair/upgrade

After several comments and google searches leading to faulty PCM's I sent mine off this morning to http://www.solopcms.com/ecm-repairs/ Solo Automotive Electronics in Miami, for $150 I figured it couldn't hurt and if it fixes the hiccup, cha ching!!!! They said turn around is a day so I am hoping to have it back by the end of the week :sombrero:
I'll update as soon as it is back in!!!

Yup, keep us posted. Is there a reason you sent yours in vs. buying the reman first? (just curious)

They did not have a reman available where I sent it and if they did it would have been $275 instead of the $150 so I probably would have the refurb anyway.

COOL! I will be doing the same, as soon as I can plan the downtime (it is my family van, not just a weekend warrior vehicle).
