Jeep dependability near last place

My 05 CRD KJ has been fine since I bought it in 2006. The only problems we had were a faulty sensor in the first year which seemed to think the bonnet(hood) was open at any speed over 40mph - solved easily by the dealer, and a heating fluid leak last May which took some tracking down! Turned out to be a very tiny split in a pipe, which could have happened to any make.

The only other problem was a fairly scary vibration - turned out to be caused by one of the OEM Goodyear tyres - it had a full-width defect on the inner tyre wall, so not visible until the dealer took all the wheels off to check the bearings.

My 05 TJ hasn't had a single warranty claim aside from the radio being replaced, ironically not a Jeep/Chrysler manufactured item. Nothing has broken. Nothing has fallen off. And yes, it does see some mild trail duty and of course some miserable winter conditions.

The 7 series was designed to travel along the autobahn at 200 kph. If you could even do that in a Jeep you'd be losing parts from Hamburg to Munich. I know we love our 4wds but let's get real.

HMMMMM, Don't see anywhere in my post about the Jeep hitting the autobahn... Again, there are those that miss the point... :D

well, come to think of it... here is a Jeep that can hit the autobahn and give the ol Bimmer a run for the money...

HMMMM, that ones not trail rated though... :D

As a 4WD enthusiast and driver, I don't buy my vehicles based on what some prissy paper pusher that works for JD Powers and Assoc. thinks. If I were looking to buy a grocery getter that can get me there in the upmost comfort I may look them up.

Look, Jeeps aren't for everyone. Especially the traditional "Wrangler/CJ" type.
- It's not going to get good MPG
- It's not aerodynamic
- It's noisy
- It does not have a lot of space
- It requires more maintenance than the average vehicle

BUT, Jeeps do one thing, they take you where you want to go. I'll tell you what I tell my friends that drive BMW's or whatever is the popular "fast" car of the week. I'll race anyone anytime for pinks even, only I pick the location! hehe

The point is the best cars are built for an intended purpose, Jeep or BMW. Unfortunately it is we that need to make compromises.

It requires more maintenance than the average vehicle

That's why JD Powers and Consumers Digest rate the Jeep so low. Does it really matter what they say?

They could probably publish a report saying Jeep is one of the most undependable vehicles on the road, and there'd be a forum somewhere where people would defend 'em anyway.. Somewhere... :smiley_drive:

Let me make one point so people understand where I'm from. The old E type Jaguar had crappy dependability but I would give my left arm for one, knowing what I was buying will require more maintenance whether by myself or through a shop. The Jeep is the same way. People on this site as well as others like it are not the buyers that JD Powers or especially Consumer Digest have in mind. We buy Jeeps because they can easily be turned into an extremely capable off-road vehicle and most can think of nothing more enjoyable than working on their car AND testing their work.

Oh,

and driving a BMW on the autobahn at 200 kph+ has its own rewards.:smiley_drive:

Let me post a note in support of JD Power. They're just reporting the
results of a survey of 50,000+ vehicle owners. They have no stake in
the outcome.

The results are not skewed because some Jeep owners don't like the
wind noise. If you look at the dependability survey results for the past
couple of years, Jeep owners' reports place the Jeep below average
in all categories (Powertrain, Body and Interior, and Feature and Accessory).

JD Power and the other print associated with value have never spoke well of the Wrangler. Only when you get to off-road prowess from a stock configuration do you see the Jeep get good press.

My .02 cents.

As for my experience, my TJ had zero issues save a bad 02 sensor (35,000 miles). My ZJ as well that were not self inflicted. My JK has had a few including leaking hard top seals (twice replaced) and a leaking head gasket which is due for warranty repair Monday-?. Also two recalls. (front tow bar assembly - first owner used had the Jeep behind an RV and the infamous Hot Oil Trany alert) 16,000 miles.

I am not swayed though... Jeep really is more than a just a vehicle to me.

Just want to update my post for accurateness.

Turns out it was intake gasket concerning the leak. Dealer was breaking everything down today to replace what they thought was the head gasket and found a bead of silicon broke on the end of the intake gasket. They say it is obvious that oil was seeping through there.

I also want to echo the latest posts.... x2!

hmmm... where to start. i have a fairly stock 2009 Jeep Wrangler unlimited Rubicon with about 15000 miles on it.
So far it has gone in for.....driver door not latching correctly (just had to adjust the striker bolts), steering shaft sleeve came loose (replaced steering shaft), faulty oil pressure sensor which i dont think is fixed since the oil pressure light still comes on after a drive in the mountains but a quick restart will make it go away. Then last month the whole rear axle was replaced because of a defect in the locker.
Its been going to the dealership about every other month since i bought it new 10 months ago.

I have a Land Rover and a Jeep. The Jeep is twice as old and has nearly twice the mileage, I trust it anywhere I take it. I will not take the LR on the trail.

What was in last place?

I never did like those sorts of happiness polls. They never ask folks about satisfaction levels after 5 10 or even 15 years of ownership. Certainly the better question to ask, and I'm convinced Jeep would come in @ the top 5 year after year. As for my 2 jeeps, my tj had no issues at all, 'cept a stupid dealership, so I just removed the door panel and tweaked the door latch linkage so it wouldn't be so rubbery, not a problem. the Liberty CRD had several issues, usually bad sensors, covered by recalls, and the morons at chrysler tried to use the same torque converter as they did on the gasser, but the recall fixed that, since then, the last 5 years have been a dream with this CRD. One just cannot drive these oil burners like one does a gasser. If you try to hammer on them all the time, they will become unreliable very quickly!
