We buy Jeeps because they can easily be turned into an extremely capable off-road vehicle
I guess this is why I got out of the 4WD arms race.My 404 only requires the tank to be full to be be a capable off-pavement vehicle:coffee:Sorry, I am not trying to p*&% in anyones Rice Krispies but the justifications alway make me laugh.
By the way, I love the old Jags and Land Rover Series vehicles.:coffee:

These polls are something I pay very close attention too. But the drivetrain issues are what I try to focus on. Jeep completely changed this vehicle when they went to the JK. The TJ was a good vehicle with the 4.0 and they decided to take something good and completely change it. I am a potential buyer of a JK, but I have been waiting to see if they really are going to fill the shoes of the TJ. Personally, I dont think they are. I may be wrong, but it is looking like the dependability factor is hit or miss. That has always been their problem. They can make one vehicle last 300,000 and then the next one in line will start giving you problems off the showroom floor.

Not a Jeep hater by the way, I have owned and offroaded 5.

I have a 1988 Cherokee approaching 300k miles, so I know and love Jeeps.

I bought a 2007 WK Grand Cherokee with the 3.0 CRD Mercedes Benz turbodiesel that I owned for the shortest time I've ever had a car in my life -- 2 months and 1200 miles. Sold it at a big loss, and I've never looked back.

The car was delivered with at least 7 things wrong with it -- from minor issues like roof rack trim falling off and speakers that wouldn't work to more major ones like windows that wouldn't go up and down and suspension that creaked over every compression/rebound. A trip to the dealer to have these addressed resulted in 0 for 7. A combination of not observing the problems, claims of repair (that made no difference driving off the lot), and parts theoretically on order for a callback that never came (and parts that were never ordered on re-checking). This was going to be a bad experience for a long time to come, I felt. A combination of lousy quality on delivery and horrible after-sale service was going to make getting it right a long slog. I just didn't have energy for it.

I still have the old Cherokee, but I'll never again visit that dealership, and can't imagine buying another Jeep.

Maybe it's just products from the Jefferson North assembly plant, which doesn't have the best reputation. I'm delighted to hear of folks with great experiences with their JK Wranglers, and wish they had more headroom. Just my 2 cents, I know, but for what it's worth, I'm in agreement with the survey results.

My dad's JK Sahara has been perfectly fine. Approaching 50,000 miles now, and that includes two trips from San Diego to Colorado Springs and back, pulling an 1,800 lbs trailer.

On the contrary, I think you bought the inter-continental-ballistic 4WD.

I think people just complain to much.

Maybe so, and the little stuff doesnt bother me at all. I have owned 3 XJs, so you know the little annoyances arnt my issue:elkgrin:! My major concern is long term reliability with the engine, trans, tcase, and axles. I dont think the JKs have quite enough hard miles on them yet to prove themselves. Jeep definitely tried to do it right. But all the Dana 60s in the world wont cover up poor manufacturing tolerances. I hope the JK proves me wrong though. It is a very sweet Jeep.

Jeep experience in Kona

On our last trip to Kona, our Chevy SUV wasn't in so the rental company offered me a 4-door convertible Jeep(don't know the model letters). The girls weren't happy as it was pouring rain but I jumped at the chance. 28,000 tourist and offroad miles(against the rules but many peeps do it anyway) and no leaks, rattles or anything. It ran and rode great. I'd love to have an Unlimited Rubicon stretch model someday. I love an inline six. My Cummins has been great.

I am creeping up on 50K on my 08 Rubicon and it has been, for the most part, trouble free. The only thing that gave me trouble was the electric sway bar disco. I went through 3 (under warranty) before I got one that was reliable. The only other thing that is a pain sometimes is my radio. Sometimes it will not work properly unless I turn off the Jeep and wait a few minutes. When I turn it back on, it works again. Kind of a PITA, but at least I know what to do and it does not happen often. For the amount of fun I have had with my Jeep, these are minor inconveniences.

The only problem I've had with my 08 Rubi is a leaky hose for the rear window washer on the hard top (poor dog found out about the leak the hard way :Wow1: ) and a squeaky window motor. Fixed one myself and when I take it in for the 30k service, I'll have them address the window motor.

06 Rubi owner here . Over on Jeep Forum and Rubicon Owners Forum there is alot of talk about bad engines in the 04-06 Wranglers . Some with only 16,000 miles on them . Reading posts from these owners with the bad engines doesn't give me a warm fuzzy feeling about mine .

Update on the 08 JK. Still chugging along at 68,000 miles. A chunk of that has been towing trailers, or long road trips. And a good amount offroad as well. No issues to report.

I have 3 wranglers ... a 97 TJ with 235,000 miles and yes it has had a starter, waterpump, radiator and other typical worn out part replaced. The motor still fires up on every key turn and it doesn't burn oil....leaks a little but doesn't burn it. The 08 JKU has 57,000 miles and has only had one problem within the first 12,000 miles I had the right rear brake caliper stick and burn up the pad and rotor. Replaced them and it has been good ever since. Now the 08 had never seen the abuse the 97 had gotten. I also have a 12 JK with the new 3.6 ... Love it! runs great, better gas mileage, better top (no side rails tongue and groove to wrestle with) and quieter inside. Don't like the 15 second delay for the AC to kick on. All in all I am a fan... I have owned a 85 CJ and a 87 YJ and had good results with them all. The only time I disliked them is when I had to sell one.
