What was up with the police? Did they have probable cause?

Lol, in the state of Indiana, if you buy a vehicle and it's an out of state vehicle, it needs a vin check, to make sure it's not stolen or something along those lines. If it's driveable they can do it at the bmv. If not they give you a form to take home and a police officer has to come out look over the vehicle, run the vin and then signs off on it. Then you can finish titling it.

I've been toying with the idea of starting a project like this in a couple of years. Really enjoying the thread so far.

Ok, so to update this, I got the tune up stuff done.
working on the stuff..

New water pump, t-stat, I cleaned up and painted the fan since it had surface rust here and there.

New cap, rotor, plugs, and wires

The old rubber do dads in the valve cover were hard as rocks, so ordered new those too! (also cleaned up the air cleaner)

Then started putting the front end back on..

The motor surrounded by fenders and a grill!

Hey it looks like a Jeep again!

Alright now time to move onto the t-case

Working on cleaning it up

For some odd reason the PO decided the trans and t-case didn't need bolted down to the skid.. as a result it slid back and forth, banging into the tub and wearing this bolt down weird and making it almost impossible to remove.

but I got it, and opened it up to peak inside

first gear driven jeep transfer case I have owned..

anyway all seemed to look ok, so I threw some gaskets at it and called it good. time to paint it up. the finished product

now time to get this pig back in the jeep.. man was it heavy

but I managed to get it back in by myself

Then threw on the much needed trans mount

and cleaned up the skid real quick

threw on some primer

and the final two coats of black

added the new mount deal..

and got her bolted to the jeep again! success!

with the jeeps entire drivetrain back in it, and nothing being held up by jack stands, I decided to roll it out a bit and clean the floor under it..

first time she's seen a little sun in a year or so..

here's a little side project, extra for you guys. I pulled the factory hitch off the 77 and cleaned it up. Worked well I thought.

new grade 8 bolts

I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. I don't plan on towing a whole lot with the Jeep, its mostly for looks. But if anything it will see a little small utility trailer now and then.

One more thing, I found this photo on the internet, I like it. I wouldn't mind my 5 ending up like this. It would make a perfect back country explorer jeep! You know, cowboy hat stuff!
