Jerry Cans (gas cans)

Finding a good quality Jerry Can is difficult these days. Most are cheap plastic. Even the good steel ones have cheap plastic nozzles and caps. This isn't going to cut it when wheeling. There are two REAL options.
One is the Scepter MFC (Military Fuel Can). They are awesome. They are made from a thick plastic and can take a beating. They are hard to come by. They can be bought on ebay but most look pretty beat up.
The second option is the old steel NATO can. They can be bought used but can be trashed too. There are some reproductions but they are made with a thinner steel. After doing some searching they are being made by the original mfg to the same specs. This http://www.deutscheoptik.com/product_info.php?products_id=1718 is where you get the real cans.

I just ordered a set of 4 (that is how they come).

My review will follow.

They sell singular cans as well. http://www.deutscheoptik.com/product_info.php?cPath=3&products_id=2162

And replacement gaskets. http://www.deutscheoptik.com/product_info.php?cPath=3&products_id=1302

10 liter cans: http://www.deutscheoptik.com/product_info.php?cPath=3&products_id=1967

Even 5 liter cans: http://www.deutscheoptik.com/product_info.php?cPath=3&products_id=1968

I posted about this in the most recent jerry can thread last week. http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/72915-Another-Jerry-Can-thread?p=1051091#post1051091

I bought 4 from them 2 or 3 years ago and they are exactly as descibed, no problems.

So my local surplus place sells can identical to these. They also have non carb spouts. Is there any thing I should watch out for? They all look to be NATO 20L cans but no real information listed. I am going to pick up two tomorrow unless theres a reason to be careful.

Thanks

I bought two 5 gallon metal jerry cans made by Crown that have metal caps and came with the spouts. I did coat the cans with a sealer to keep the inside from rusting so I don't have to keep them full like I have done for the past 30 years. Here you can see them while I'm building my new rear bumper.

Here are the cans at my local surplus. Are these worth $46? Also the nozzles seem like junk but I couldn't test fit them with a gasket so they didn't feel right. I also grabbed a picture of the water containers they have for $26 and some of the new plastic ammo cans....

Looks like that Wedco can may be unlined and therefore prone to rust. Deutsche Optik's are reported to be lined with the proper fuel-resistant lining.

Here's a spout that works great:

This is a timely thread.I have decided to retire all my metal Jerry cans after having some of the lining get captured in my funnel last weekend (red) .I have an old Scepter can that was given to me 10 years ago and although it saw military service (Canada) it is still in better condition than my metal cans (mostly Swiss but also German). The local dealer (National 4WD) sells them for about $70 ea over the counter but since I want 4 to 8 of them, I can get a better price. I really feel that the Scepters are the fuel container for this century. I have 2 non military Scepter cans (1 for my water pump and the second for my work truck) and they seal better, flow better, pretty much are better than ANYTHING else on the market.Just my 2 cents worth:coffee:
