I totally agree. Inside. There's got to be other gear that is less precious than the fridge and food (and the fridge's electronics) that can go in a dry-bag or uber-duffel and ride on top of the tent, tonneau cover or additional rack system. That...or pare down your kit, you are hauling too much...no wonde the 350 powered heep can "feel it". ...Just sayin'...

It's not an issue with lack of space in the trailer. I REALLY don't want to have to tilt the top up every time we want to get a drink. As much as I seriously don't want to do it I may end up cutting an access door in the rear of the trailer and put the cooler on a slide out shelf. Without the door cut in I will have to open the cover each time we need a drink and with the rtt and kayaks it will be a pita. I'm not real happy with that idea but I guess if that ends up my last option I may have no other choice.

Space isn't the issue at all but access is.

Btw to add the trailer was empty yesterday and only had my rtt on it payload wise. My 350 is literally wore out. I'm hoping to make it another year before I'm forced to swap it out.

Hi Jevy just was reading your build report on your trailer very cool. I’m total Noob to 4 wheeling and expedition travel. I’m also recovering from a self- inflected accident. Motorcycle accident that happen back on Oct. 31 12 should be able to get back to work here in two or three months. I’m thinking about giving up motorcycle and do some 4 wheel exploring. Was wondering back in your post 60 you mention about the trailer starting to tip when you were on the side was just curious if that was getting in the tent the is cantilevered over the side or just the side of the trailer? Reason I was asking I would really like to get a set up like your building not sure if I would like it if it is that unstable.

CB......you and I have alot in common!!! I had 5 motorcycles in the garage last August and had a m/c accident while in Sturgis SD for the rally last year. By the time I got home I decided I just wanted to get out of it for a while. I was in the middle of selling all of them when my back was hurt. The body shifted because I had carelessly forgot that when I put the bed back on I didn't bolt it to the frame because I needed new hardware. It was actually just the tub flexing a little when I was going up/down the ladder. It wasn't a bunch to it but once I had my surgery I had lots of time to just sit around the house looking at the trailer/jeep and realized that I had not bolted the tub to the frame.

Thanks for the quick reply. Hope you're feeling better now don't rush it let it come to you. LOL I've had some back trouble also not as bad as your's but nun the less nothing is worse than be down in the back. Can't wait for the rest of your build. Good luck with the rest of your build, and Thanks.

Thanks. At this point I'm down to painting it when the weather warms , figure out how to mount the fridge and I still am debating on mounting a few lights underneath for area lighting while camping in the dark.

I think I need a bigger truck!
Lights under are not a bad idea. When I went out with my trailer setup last September, I remember thinking "man it would be nice to have some lights under the trailer". So you are not getting blinded and can still find your keys when you drop them...and you will. I am going to wire up some LED lights under the trailer (Oznium 4 LED pods) and get a couple of small spot type lights for exterior lighting when at camp.

I agree that lifting the lid is a bit of a PITA when you want a drink, but honestly I would not cut a hole in the tub. I would keep a small cooler in the Jeep and seal the food and stuff up in the trailer safe from water, beasties and people trying to steal it. If it is in the back of the Jeep, it is easier access...but you might not want to have to go to the Jeep all the time for your stuff either?

I am mounting mine in the trailer, lifting the lid is easy and it is more secure.

ok so a little update. I've taken a couple weeks off of the trailer/Jeep to get my head around what I wanted to do with the fridge. I have decided that I am going to mount it inside the trailer(even though that is the last place I want it) and am going to fab up a stand that will keep the fridge up so that the door is flush with the height of the bed. In other words I don't want to have to lean over and down into it to get a drink out. I also still have to run the power back there for it but that shouldn't take too long.

On the fridge....I bought the middle sized Edgestar and took it camping last weekend in a car camping trip with our hammocks. Granted it was pretty cold outside(teens at night and upper 20's during the day) but the fridge worked fine in the back of my wife's suv. I do think I'll end up building a rack to put it on the back of the Jeep in case I want to go somewhere with the fridge but not the trailer. I'm suppose to go on a campout/kayak trip next weekend and I'm debating on taking the Jeep/trailer. It's about 350 miles each way and I don't know if that's too far for a shakedown run......

anyway I hope to have some progress pics tomorrow. I plan to have everything I need done to have it ready for the trip should i decide to take it.

finally an update with a few pics :)

Yesterday I managed to get the fridge in the trailer and bolted in some aluminum angle L's that I cut to keep it from sliding then I strapped it to the bed of the trailer with using some rock straps that I use to carry on my motorcycle and a set of footman loops bolted to the floor. I also took a small piece of angle iron and used it to mount the 12v receptacle in the bed for powering the fridge. I ended up not having to build a shelf for the fridge because it came up to the height I wanted just sitting on the trailer bed floor. Also had some time to cut some plywood to put on the bottom and front of the generator basket. My main thinking for that was to keep road debris from constantly hitting the generator going down the road.

This afternoon I plan to make a cover for the fridge out of reflectix to help with insulating the fridge a little better. After today the only thing I have left to do that is in the plans for now is the monstaliner. I'm going on a kayak/campout next weekend and am trying to decide whether to carry the trailer/jeep or take the car. It's a little over 300 miles each way and I'm a little worried about taking the rig that far for a shakedown run.

small update. I have spent some time prepping everything to get ready for it's first trip this weekend. I loaded two kayaks and am very pleased to say that the gas struts on the top are strong enough to hold the top open with two kayaks on the roof(and bet it would probably hold one or two more). I also made a reflectix cover to go over the top of the edgestar fridge. Tomorrow I will get some more pics. I'm REALLY glad that the top would hold up kayaks on the top. I really didn't want to have to muscle it everytime I needed access with it loaded. I'm still trying to find the "perfect" set of latches and have tried two but still haven't found the right one for me just yet. For now I'm going to use HD ratcheting straps. I'll get some pics tomorrow once it's all loaded up.

ok so I have a first trip report on both the Jeep and Trailer. If it's ok I'm going to crosspost this on both threads since one compliments the other.

This weekend we drove a hair over 700 miles with the Jeep and 600 miles with the Jeep/trailer. First off I was nervous as I could be about going that far on it's first trip out. We went to a hammock forums.net hammock hang in the Ozarks. This was a camping and kayak trip so we went fully loaded with food/camping gear/kayaks/paddle gear.

First off the Jeep handled the trailer great on the interstate once I was able to relax a little(just nervous first minute out). When we loaded it up I took this pic and told my wife there is no telling how many hundreds of hours were sitting in the driveway between the two projects.

Once on the interstate I had noticed that the temp gauge was having a hard time remaining consistent. I'm going to add an overflow bottle for the radiator and fab up some sort of a fan shroud to help focus the electric fans purpose. We ran approx 60-65 on the interstate.

To access the campground we had to go down a 5 mile or so gravel road that was in pretty bad shape. It was storming all the way home today and I really believe the locker made it possible to get out of there this morning. I wouldn't doubt it rained 3-4" last night.

We also drove to some area sites to view Elk and Waterfalls

The only mechanical problem with the Jeep was the windshield wiper linkage broke about halfway home so thanks to a good coating of rain x I was able to make it home without the use of windshield wipers.....going to have to look at it tomorrow to see what actually happened.

Now for the trailer......It towed well and we used the fridge/power while in camp. Everything worked great with a couple of exceptions. First off I need to find a set of latches or something because running two straps across the trailer makes it a PITA to get into the trailer so this is a priority for me. The gas struts have enough strength to open with the tent and both kayaks on the trailer so other than the straps the access couldn't be any easier.

We were not planning on using the CVT tent but I made a mistake and left my sons quilt set at home so he slept in the tent for the three nights. This was the first time I've set it up since the day my back disc went out.....I'm trying to get over the bad mojo between me and that tent. :nono: I slept last night in the tent because it was going to be raining and didn't want to break down both my hammock and tent in the rain. We had ALOT of rain last night and there were no issues with leaks or wind(awnings were tied flat) but I must say I was very disappointed in the comfort of the mattress. I think I will probably have to use a thermarest on top of the mattress. My son(granted he is 12) didn't mind the mattress but for me it just won't do.

A few pics on the way home. It was pouring rain for the entire 300 miles and I'm pleased with the way it handled towing/driving in the rain through the mountains/curves. We loaded the kayaks upside down to try to keep the amount of rainwater caught in the cockpit to a minimum.

The ground was very un-level and the jacks did a great job of getting everything fairly level.

The trailer also showed a few areas for improvement. The latches that I've already pointed out and also a few others. I need to find a better way to organize my stuff in the trailer. We had a small action packer with our kitchen stuff and it worked great. I think I'll probably pick a couple more of those up to keep the camping and boat gear in. I'm also going to take a real hard look at everything we took on the trip and start trimming some bulk/weight......I definitely carry too many things that we don't use but that's a fault of me not the Jeep or the trailer.

When we got home I cannot express my level of satisfaction of finally being able to use both the trailer/Jeep for the purpose they were built.
