My step-dad actually used to know John Wayne and ran some cattle with him up in the White Mountains of Az. Can you imagine riding along and all of a sudden here comes the real John Wayne really riding a horse???! Too cool.

Too bad my step-dad doesn't have any cool trucks like that. Lots of old Internationals and various autos out on the farm but none that look like that!

That thing is AWESOME!!!

We should have an "Historical Expo Rig" thread...

John Steinbeck's Rocinante is my all-time favorite:

I have no idea why its on display at the airport. I walked in to pick up my mom and saw it sitting there. I had about 15 min until her plane landed so I went back out to the truck for my camera. Looked around to see if other trucks were on display but that was the only one. A very nice rig.

So, did they lift the roof of the Travelall over the passenger compartment so the occupants could wear their 10 gallon hats while driving?

Thanks for sharing! It's great to see an old truck well preserved.

Googled:

John Wayne owned a number of ranches in Arizona, including the "Red Eye Ranch" operated by his Red River Land Company, in Stanfield.

John Wayne's customized 1966 International Travel-All "War Wagon" was on display with the Riverside Casino's vintage auto collection in 2002. The Duke had the roof raised six inches and a hatch added so that he could hunt antelope at his Red Eye Ranch while standing through the roof. Other alterations included a 5 speed transmission, heavy duty shock absorbers with additional leaves in the springs, heavy duty bumper, winch, and air conditioning. The vehicle was so well suited for him that he had it shipped to Africa for use on his hunting safaris. 6-02.

I'll bet that is an ambulance modification. Pretty common at that time. Either a converted ambulance or sent to the ambulance body shop for the "high rise" conversion.

My first two vehicles were Travelalls, a '57 (1st year they offered factory 4wd) and a 68. Those things were tanks! The '68 had a 345 V-8 and a 4 speed. Unfortunately it also had manual steering which was not fun!

It was there a lot longer than that. I saw it at least 3 times, and I don't go to Laughlin that much. The sign in front said the roof was raised for John Wayne. He was tall, and probably liked to wear his hat inside.

Incidentally, the car museum at the Riverside Casino in Laughlin is worth a visit if you are nearby. The price is right (free) and they have a nice variety of vehicles there.
