Joinin' the Montero Club with a Gen 2.5

Will you build another if I pay you??? I want the sides to hug the bottom of the rear fenders behind the rear tires after a chop to prevent further quarter panel damage from slamming down on rocks!!

Nice work. Did you sleeve those through holes in the frame? Maybe worthwhile since you're making a tire carrier. At least that's what was suggested for things like sliders. With weight of the bumper & spare, it may be needed. Not sure but I'm one who prefers to overbuild.

Might also want to run a 45 degree gusset between the back of the bumper and the attachment fin. You'll want more bearing area on that hinge line between bumper and fin, and a gusset would do it

My inlaws have a 94 Monty that just SITS, yet they won't sell it to me :( I guess I'll live vicariously through your build. Looks awesome. Great trip pictures as well!

Thanks poriggity, looks like you have a cool project vehicle to keep you busy until your inlaws' Montero becomes available.

Junkyard Expedition, 2-1-14

Well, I had my truck broken into last Friday for the second time in a month. Three weeks ago the passenger rear door glass was smashed while parked in the Mission in San Francisco. On Friday, in Hollywood, some bastard bumped the passenger door lock and opened the door while the truck was parked in a paid lot with an attendant on site. I'm highly focused on vehicle security at the moment and am definitely going to start upgrading a few things in that department.

First things first, on Saturday, it was off to the junkyards of Sun Valley for some lock cylinders...

On my way I stopped at the metal supply house for some material for the bumper build. This was in the parking lot. Fantastic!

Build thread here. The owner, rideglobally, was a cool guy and happy to show me around the vehicle. We spoke for a good half hour. It's quite a build!

Then, an hour later I was at the junkyard amidst the usual assortment of Gen 2s. There seem to be 4 or 5 every time I go, which is good in terms of getting parts in the now, but the high rate of Montero attrition is starting to make me worry about scarcity in the long term.

And then there was this exotic beast. A 1998 Gen 2.5. I neeeeever see 2.5s. In expo white, no less. Locker, straight body, good paint, interior was all there. With 150,000 miles on the clock, it was a life cut short and a cryin' shame. This is the truck I want to be driving.

This was in the back, never opened.

I ended up taking the brush bar.

And these tail light guards.
WP_20140201_017.jpg

There were two of these oddballs. Basically Delicas, right?

And because I can never leave good parts well enough alone...

I grabbed the brush guard off this Trooper. It's a Con-Ferr, must be an early one.

And these guys.

This is probably how most hoarders start out.
