Time to source a rack. Eezi-Awn K9 or GMB are my top choices as unladen they will fit in the garage.

The GMB are very low profile, and may make mounting a RTT difficult. Can cover the flat part of the 110 roof for about 2,500 USD.

EeziAwn would be half that, but I believe it would sit too tall.

Would the FrontRunner Slimline II sit too tall?

have you named your defender??
maybe cape town in its future?

No name for the truck, we just call it the truck.
Cape Town would be cool, bit of a drive. That Budapest to Bamako run is stuck in my brain. The vids on their website are epic.

Not much difference, but it is a game of inches.

Another Nakatanenga visit and a secret

4th of July in Germany is not a holiday, but I did have the day off. Drove the 2 hours NNW to Nakatanenga to pick up a cruise control for the Defender, and a few other items.

Peter was as always very helpful. We chatted vehicles, as they have some nice items about. A 130 HCPU is getting resto'd, and there are always Defenders and Discos in the work area. We also talked about how many American companies never replied to his inquiries for distributing Naka kit. He seems very happy to be allied with Jason at Series Defender Outfitters. I think this is a huge win formLR/Toyota/Jeep guys, as now their items are available in the US.

Got the cruise, the damper system for holding back door open, and discussed roof rack options. They carry Frontrunner and their own brand, the CargoBear. https://www.nakatanenga.de/zubehoer...ar-systemdachtraeger-fuer-land-rover-defender

I currently have the Howling Moon tent on Thule crossbar system. While this works fine, there is no place to hold other (lightweight) cargo. My big limits are height and quick release. Some Frontrunner markets used to have a quick disconnect kit, but I believe this is no longer available. When I mentioned quick disconnect, Peter got a sparkle in his eye, and invited me to the "super secret R&D labs". It is well disguised as the back of the warehouse.

Peter has come up with a "why didn't I think of that" solution to RTT quick disconnects. It will be ready for release in 3-4mweeks, I believe. I am sworn to secrecy on most details, but my order is in! Imagine 4 bolts to place or remove tent, and the option to install in either side or back directions of opening any time you put the tent on. His solution is basic, but with the quality and engineering typical of the company. CNC milled, well designed. It is designed to fit vitually any rack or cross bar set up. To quote Vince from Slap-Chop, "Made in Germany, so you know it's good".

Pricewise, a little more than one would expect, until I considered the actual R&D costs, the materials, and the fit/finish of the product. Like I said, I ordered on, and on the spot bought the CargoBear full rack system.

Modular rack, fitted all the pieces in the back of the Defender for trip home. Airline rail type slots everywhere. Lightweight, and modular. I will install without diamond plate, as he also has new decking in R&D, and it is even lighter.

Hope to have cruise installed by Friday, doing it in pieces after work. The fridge is in, the stove and kitbox are loaded. We leave Friday for a 12 day trip from Stuttgart down through Switzerland, a bit of Italy, and on to Nice/Provance.

It typical LR fashion, I am carrying spares with me, as my appointment for tranny work (gearbox, not crossdressing) is not until the end of the month. Clutch, PP, throwout, and the Ashcroft intermediate shaft kit. If it goes to pieces, we should be able to find a garage to put it back together.

Great thread.
If you make it to Nice, check out the Restaurant Barracuda at 2 Rue Meyerbeer... If it's still around. Spent a summer working there when I was 18... About 18 years ago.

After a trip from Stuttgart, two days camping in Alps, down to Nice (we left day before), 3 days in Provence, and then Paris...

Parked car in one of Paris' special overheight garages. Went to pick it up, battery dead. Figured maybe with fridge plugged in it drew, even when turned off. Push started a fully loaded 110.

I assumed that if I drove back to hotel, got wife and kids, and left it running it would charge.

Left Paris. Two hours later stop for fuel. I slowed to a coast then shut off, tried to start with key. Nothing. Popped clutch while still coasting, fired up. Got fuel, back on road. Wife takes over driving, I nap.

15 mins into it, she wakes me up, as Three Amigos (TC, ABS, and Brake indicators) have appeared. I shut off air, they go off, she pulls to side and I drive. 45 mins later Amigos are back, with battery light and check engine light. And now limp mode...no faster than 60 KMH. Then all gauges die. We luckily found an exit, pulled off, payed excessive French toll, and found a park spot. Truck died. Key only gets starter clicks.

Call to German auto club (ADAC) and flatbed picked us up took us to shop. Tried a new battery, no start. Auto club put us in a hotel, waiting for a car rental place to open (none near us open on Sundays, so had to wait until today).

This whole episode was about 6 hours. Thankfully it was not too hot or in winter.

I have perused the UK and Euro LR sites, and it may be immobiliser. I did check all fuses, battery connections, ground straps, etc. No overheat, no other indications.

Once we get rental car, will probably return to garage and try the remote fob lock and unlock sequence that works for some. It is worth a shot.

If no go, ADAC will tow to the dealer we bought from. The best money I have spent on the Defender so far, as it covers all our costs to get home and all the towing.

Oberalppass

Google maps will show you where the no pavement areas are. Great views, and some stealth camp areas.

Defender and roads like this..lol. Right around last corner was a little shack selling butter and cheese. We had some good bread, so this became a quick snack break. They also had goat cheeses and goat skins for sale. The skins had the goat names attached with a little tag. Tami was one of them. We got a kick out of that.

Camped across from us, nice people with a well kitted 110.

Apologies for sideways pics.

Oh boy...just when I thought he had learnt how to post pics...:)....
On a serious note, hope you didn't get caught up in the whole nice thing....hmmm, why are you always nearby when something bad happens....what do you do for work again..?.
Sounds like an alternator problem on your truck, just ran until the small amount of juice it needed to keep a diesel running expired... And yes, then the immobilized kicks in and you sometimes have to reset it with the Land Rover tool....real pain in the ***....it sometimes resets by leaving the battery disconnected and then reconnecting it and operating the remote control to initiate the alarm sequence..
