Klean Kanteens

Anyone using these?
I first heard about them at fjcruiserforums.com last year.

I finally ordered two Thursday of this week, and they showed up today.
I bought a 27 oz and a 40 oz one.
Also ordered two of the bicycle type bottle tops with the top you lift up to drink from.
Funny thing is REI took them off of their website.
They were listed Thursday, but not now.
You can however buy a bottle and cap together.

Here are the two models I got delivered today.

Klean Kanteen Stainless-Steel Water Bottle with Loop-Top Cap - 27 oz.

They come in plain stainless steel color, or another part number will get you the colored ones.
I went for moss green.
This bottle will stay with me in the FJ Cruiser as it will fit into the cup holders.

Klean Kanteen Stainless-Steel Water Bottle with Loop-Top Cap - 40 oz.

This one will be for work to stay hydrated.
During the summer at work I often can drain a 64 oz water bottle before lunch.

From what I have heard and read online, these kanteens are suppose to be a good item.

Seem to be just like the SIGG brand bottles and other knok offs sold at most big box outdoor stores. But a goo sorce for liquid storage. Just don't misplace the lids.

We switched to Klean Kanteen a couple of years ago and use them all the time for camping, hiking, bicycling, and general beverage transport. We've got a bunch of different sizes and tops, and find many uses for them. The little ones are great for lunch bags.

Couple of hints: stainless steel transmits heat immediately, so careful when filling with hot liquids; bend to fit bike water bottle cages so they don't rattle; and the sippy tops are great for hiking and in the car. May be just my imagination, but these seem to preserve the taste and quality of beverages better than our old plastic water bottles, and are easy to keep clean.

I also switched to the stainless Kleen Kanteens about 2 years ago and haven't looked back. I use a couple of the 800 ml size ones and they fit my cup holder, lunch cooler and bike cages spot on. I got tired of buying bottled water every trip out and then having to deal with the empties. I looked at the Sigg bottles but prefered the stainless steel Kleans.
The local outdoor shops sell them and also stock all the lid variants so I could have different tops for different purposes I guess. Finally, I too find water tastes better in them. I keep water in my fridge in a Brita container and fill them from it.The savings over buying water at the store (or gas station) paid for them the first month.

Huh. Stainless steel bottles made in China? Wonder how much lead and chromium and other heavy metals are leaching out of them.

I'm still using my Nalgene. I just wish I'd bought more before they took them off the market.

i wonder the same thing,,, prolly nothing to worry about but still. stainless is supposed to be the best for non leaching, the liner in the SIGG can break if dented, and we all know the controversy over plastic.

it seems we just cant win and every other week something comes up to show the next best thing is not any better than the thing it replaced.

i say get what ya like, nothing is gonna be perfect and if it bother ya that much ya might as well stop breathing the air, drinking the water, and eating the food cause non of those are pure and "safe'.

These are nothing like the SIGG bottles.

All but the double-walled stainless steel SIGG bottle are aluminum with a food-grade liner.

The KK are great, as are the SS SIGG bottles.

Josh had a Kleen Kanteen for a few months before the outside of it started rusting...that is correct...rust...we returned it to REI and picked up a couple more Camlebak bottles.

Our experience with the Klean Kanteens is that they are very rugged, and ours have never rusted (they are stainless steel, after all). We have a dozen and they get plenty of abuse. Sorry to hear some have not had the best experience with them.

Wow, that's surprising. I don't blame you for returning it. It must have been an anomoly. I have two and have never had an issue.

I bought some cheap aluminum water bottles at a local store. They have been durable, they don't leak, and they're lined, so whatever I put in them has no metal contact. I bought four 1/2 liter bottles for $3.99 each on sale.

I would like to have some Sigg bottles, but I had to ask myself if they would serve me any better at more than five times the price. I'd have more bling, and bragging rights that it's a Sigg, but . . . .

I decided to forgo the bragging rights and the prestige. If and when I damage or lose one of these, I'm out a whole 4 bucks.

A friend of mine has stainless bottles like the KK made in China. He said his used to be made in the US and then the co stopped making them and he couldn't find another NA supplier so he had to go to China. I told him to make sure of the quality of the stainless from over there. I will not use his bottles and he gave us some for free.

I used to work for a company that made stainless beer tanks. some palets of steel we would get from China (due to lack of availabilty from anywhere else) would have surface rust on them. This is not from the stainless its from how it was handled or packaged. if stainless comes in contact with Carbon steel it can get surface rust on it that is very hard to get off due to the surface texture of SS. We had to use special grinding wheels, covers for our rolls etc. to stop this.

It was quite bizarre....I mean you figure its stainless steel right? The guy at REI was as baffled as we were.

This is the type of thing that raises my question. First of all, there are many different grades of SS, and not all of them are "rust proof". 509 grade gets surface rust very quickly, but it's cheap. It's what OEM's typically use for "stainless steel exhausts". They will rust, but do last much longer than mild steel.

Anyway, so it would appear some KK's were made with off-grade steel. What else is in them? Mattel couldn't control their suppliers, which is why we had the toy recalls. How is a family run company from California going to do any better?

I guess I'm really just mad at the whole stupid BPA thing. The Nalgene bottles were a pretty good product, and BPA has never been conclusively shown to cause any problems. Just suspected. Not to mention, all your canned food (liners) and anything in a clear plastic bottle is made with the same plastics. My tin foil hat theory is that everybody had a collection of indestructible bottles. We were set for life. Sales were down. So, they make this big deal over BPA, we all get scared, and run out and buy new bottles...

$50 says 5 years from now, we find out about all these bad things in metal bottles, and we get pushed back to GLASS. Full-circle.

From the Klean Kanteen website:

Klean Kanteens are constructed of high-quality, sanitary grade 304 stainless steel. The stainless steel in Klean Kanteens has a low nickel content and is preferred by breweries and dairies.

I have a sigg and a KK. I prefer the sigg for drinking- the smaller opening is less prone to spills. Every other time I drink from the KK, I dribble water down my chin like a fool. But the KK is bigger, so I end up using it more.
