Well I've landed in Oman, having left the US with my family and dog...

now the truck finding starts.......I had to give my disco away for almost nothing....it was worth more in parts than the price I got.

So.........the mission is buy something here to use for the 2-3 years of my contract then take a 6 month or year sabatical from work

and take it down through africa,,, I know, everyones dream

But I'm right now only 1 country away from the northern parts
of Ethiopia

Cut across yemen, then the red sea and I'm there.....

So as usual we have the truck decision to make.......Defenders were never imported here as they are classed as military vehicles..

But there are a lot brought in from the countries next door, this morning I located a 1989 defender which has been recently overhauled.....gearbox/ transfer case etc etc
and fitted with a naturally asperated 3.5ltr V8, how reliable are these ?

I have no idea.......other than the efi disco 2's and the abs lights....hehehe

There are little or no diesels in the end of the world as gas is cheap.

Running around there are 80 series Toyo's within my price range, complete with leather and cd players....

On the streets, I've seen there are 4 door lancruiser II's 70 series as well, which look interesting

I've only seen one troopy since arriving so they don't look like an option....

Is the V8 110 a serious contender.....or is an 80 series really that good a truck to travel down the dark continent ?

Little or no internet sites here.....I have also found a 200 series manual diesel toyota LC for 24K with dual tanks......but very high milage, base models used in the desert as lease trucks
for the oilfield..comes complete with interior roll cage 2003 models

I would go with Toyota. That being said, I have had very good luck with the carburated 3.5 rover V8. If it is the twin SU type, keep the oil in the pots topped up and you will do just fine. If it's a converted Weber then it's even easier.

Good luck on your decision and keep us updated.

If it were me (and I know that I differ from most on this board), all else being the same (like parts availability in the target countries, load, etc.), I would look for something besides a Defender.

As I’ve mentioned elsewhere, I’ve got quite a bit of wheel time in 110s and 130s, on road and off, and find them to be extremely uncomfortable. For a trip anywhere near the length you are talking about, I think there are plenty of other options that will make the miles go much easier.

IMHO, FWIW, and all that. Sorry if I’ve offended anyone’s sensibilities…

Try and get some wheel time in a Defender, and try to imagine what it would be like to spend significant time in it. Maybe it would work for you, but (again, all else being the same) I would look for a LC 80 or 100, for the long-term comfort and reliability.

Oh, I dont think you are offending anyone, especially in the circumstances he described. A Land Rover just does not seem to be the logical choice. My 130 is great and would trust it anywhere, but that is because I am intimately acquainted with it and feel very comfortable on long trips with it. If I just moved to a new country where LR's are not imported and Toyotas are a plentiful it makes the decision very easy.

Sometimes you have to think with your head and not your heart.

I agree with the above posts ... a Defender, as much as I have dreams of owning one, wouldn't be a truck I'd choose to travel across war-torn countries of Northern Africa in. You'll be putting miles in places where a vehicular breakdown could mean your life, and while any vehicle can fail, some fail more than others :)

It really won't matter.

You're going to have a great time regardless.
Open up a bag of Pofak Oman and start driving.

mmm so its seems the recomendations are the same as my thoughts.....

Old rattle box V's a newer "reliable" toyo.......

If I could get a later diesel 110 I'd settle for it, but the older ones I've seen here would to me, be more of a liability than a good base for an expo rig

OK now to the toyo area..:archaeolo

Can't address the Gulf, but for Africa ...

there are three options:

-- Toyota,
-- Toyota,
-- and Toyota.

This assumes that you are going to depend on local access to parts, service, tires, etc. If you do all of your own work and can get parts via DHL, then buy what ever you like. (I had the old Chevrolet Blazers in Africa for eight years.)

There are three options for engines ...

-- Diesel
-- etc.

FWIW - I have a 2003 Diesel Landcruiser.

you have to treat a Rover like a member of the family. If you raise it right, "teaching" and "preparing" it for the world-outside over a number of years, yes, it will go on to do well as an adult when the time comes. It will still need guidance, and the occasional bail-out from trouble.

If you need something off-the-shelf to acquire, (ab)use, and dispose of - sure, a Toyota should fit the bill!
