LC Prado vs 4runner

The Current Prado and 4R are on the 150 chassis. The FJ continues to share the 120 chassis with the Tacoma. Mechanically, everything is pretty simillar, The full-time cases all have a Torsen diff (IIRC). While it would be swell, if they sold all the cool overseas versions here in the States, advantages of one or the other don't outweigh availability. To me, the 4Runner to have is a V8 2005-07 SR5. The Prao to have is a LJ150- NA diesel with distributor injection, baby!

Not true, both the 2010+ 4runners and 2010+ FJ Cruisers share the Prado 150 frame, only the FJ Cruiser is based off of the 2 door 150 frame. The current gen Tacoma's are running a mostly C channel frame. There are very similar components on the 4Runner Trail as there are on the Prado 150. KDSS and Crawl Control

Anyone else care to comment here?

Just buy a Lexus GX-470 and call it good...you can actually find them on the used market le$$ than a 4Runner.

And presumably in better condition since most were owned by grumpy old farts.

..and can be turned into fairly nice off pavement rigs, without too much effort.

When you say less than 4runner, are you comparing to a new 4runner or vs a equal year. If the latter do you know what the reason for that would be?

VS equal year....you can find the GX 470 under $20K with low miles, if you look hard enough.

Some luxury vehicles tend to drop in value quickly, just look at the BMW used market...

Really? That is a surprise to me. So even year GX vs 4runner(4x4 and leather) with similar miles will net me the GX for the same or less as the 4runner, despite the GX costing around 10k more new? Is there a reason for that? I know for BMW some of that has is related with repair costs. Can't really be the same here?

How are the GX vs the 4runner when it comes to off-roading? Does the GX have like softer/luxurious springs and/or shocks? If so will that affect off-roading?

Hey, it was a surprise to me as well...I started seeing GX build threads so I started comparing prices...now it isn't easy, but there are deals out there where the GX is a couple grand cheaper. All I can guess is, that the 4Runner is more popular, more in demand...and the GX is a bit under the radar here in the States. At least for the off-pavement crowd.

The GX is going to need to beefed up suspension wise to do anything serious...but plenty of aftermarket out there for it, since it is nearly the same as a 4Runner/FJ. Total Chaos has some awfully nice suspension systems.

I take that is the same for the 4runner(not sure about 4R models with the off-road package)? Would the body be some how less durable as the 4runner or just as equal?

Thanks for that Kermit. Totally needed that laugh today.

Ya know...I never paid too much attention to the GX 470, then I started reading build threads...not a bad platform. Especially if you buy one used, most likely it has never ever seen dirt. A friend of mine owns one, I think I like it better than a 4Runner, seems more spacious for some reason...taller windows perhaps?
