licensed audio for your video creation

The proliferation of cameras, smartphones and other devices that record video has created a problem. You'll need a soundtrack to increase the interest in and impact of your video. Most people just grab an MP3 of their favorite recording artists and add it to the movie.

Using copyrighted music in this way without permission, even if you paid for the CD it came from, is illegal. The excuse that "everybody's doing it" won't keep you from substantial fines if and when the RIAA wants to press charges. At the very least, using unlicensed music will get your video pulled off Youtube if the copyright owner complains.

Vimeo, a company that hosts personal videos, now offers a solution. In a partnership with Audiosocket, Vimeo now offers a library of music that budding producers can license to use in their videos. The price per track is $2 for personal use, and $98 for a commercially produced video. More information here

The audio tracks available are mostly from artists who are not household names. You'll have to listen to lots of tracks to find one that meets your needs. But kudos to Vimeo for trying to address a growing problem, and to educate the folks who post videos to their site.

In addition to the Vimeo service described above, there are several services that make royalty-free music available to movie producers. Just search Google for "royalty free music" or "buyout music."

Some songs are free for personal use. For others, the terms offered range from $1 to $10 for a single track, up to unlimited annual access for $300 to $500.
