Light weight rock crawler trailer

Have made a little progress on the trailer. The deck is on and I hope to mount fenders tomorrow. If I get the fenders mounted, I'll post some pics.

I was concerned about mounting the aluminum tread plate deck, to the steel trailer. The concern was rust, where the deck would wear through the paint on the frame. My solution was to take some 3M double sided tape and attach 1/16th inch EPDM rubber strips to the tops side of the frame. I think this will help keep the deck quiet too.

I wanted to do fenders that would flex on the outside. I ended up riveting some 1/4" fiber reinforced rubber to the fender tread plate. As backing, I used clear poly carbonate. I know that if I hit something, the poly carbonate will get sacrificed. I just wanted to protect the aluminum. The poly carb can be easily replaced. Some pics of the inside and outside of the fenders:

Got the fenders mounted and pretty good start on the box. Box (without lid) weighs in at 58 lbs. It will gain a little more weight as I'm going to laminate some door skin to the inside of the sheet metal.

Looks like the place that I bought it from, is out of stock LINK

If you search for buyers polymer trailer box you'll find them LINK

BTW - if you like black, I think the Dee Zee box looks like it might be a better box: LINK

I spend a lot of time in the desert, so white was a better option for me.

Looking good man... love the size. Where did you get that tongue box from?

I've been slow with updates. The trailer made it to SEMA, via San Dunes at Dumont. It's tough to tell how smooth the ride is on dirt roads, but I didn't even know the trailer was there on the highway. I had to slap things together, trying to get the trailer ready for the trip. I'll be doing some finish work, before I post any more pictures.

I managed to source some good adhesive backed neoprene foam tape. With the lid hinges I used, I needed 1/4" and 5/8" foam tape to seal between the lid and the box. Both are 1" wide and I'm very happy with how it worked out. The supplier required a minimum purchase order. As a result, I have a bunch of 1/4" tape left over. If you're looking for 1/4" thick X 1" wide X 60' neoprene tape, then send me a PM. I can sell them for $20 per roll (CHEAP).
