Yes, I think I'm going to have to get a smartphone. I'm eligible for an "upgrade" and it's just occurred to me that there are too many times when a smartphone would have been useful for me to ignore the obvious benefits.

I guess the first choice would be "which phone?" My last two (non-smart) phones have been Casio G'Zone ruggedized phones: A Boulder (flip phone) and a Brigade (Clamshell texting phone.) Nice to have a rugged phone that is water and shock resistant.

I know Casio makes a ruggedized smartphone (the Commando) but I have to say that after reading the reviews on Verizon's web site, it doesn't seem like a good choice.

Honestly, I'm thinking I'll go to the granddaddy of them all, the iPhone. Verizon offers the 4s for $99.00 which seems like a decent deal (with a 2 year activation, of course, but I'm planning on being with Verizon for a good long time anyway.) They also offer the iPhone 4 for free but the 4s seems like the better phone.

My rationale for going with Apple (and no, I'm not a Mac user) is just the fact that it's so universal that finding accessories/apps for it ought to be easier than with the myriad of 'Droid phones.

I also did the side-by-side comparo of several different phones and one thing that intrigued me was the 4s's ability to work as a "global phone" in GSM areas.

So, that being said, what advice can you give a prospective new smartphone user?

Reading a lot of the user reviews, I see many complaints about battery life, this is on pretty much all the phones. I am used to charging up my phone maybe once a week. I guess with a smartphone that's not realistic. I get it, a smartphone is a mini computer that is running all the time so of course it's going to use up its battery faster. So what techniques have you all adopted to deal with this situation? I see little "emergency chargers" sold in stores, I guess those are usually for smart phones.

Next question: I have heard the screen can be fragile. The smartphone with the cracked screen seems to be something of a cliche. What can be done to protect it? Can it be replaced and if so how expensive is that? Does the touch screen work if it's cracked?

Third question: May sound dumb, but I know a smartphone is a little computer - how does it compare as a phone? I'm used to my Casio and Motorola phones working in pretty remote areas. Does the iPhone (and other smartphones) work well as a telephone? It would be silly for me to "upgrade" to a new phone and find that while it's a great computer/camera/music player/gps, it's a lousy phone.

Fourth question: Apparently the basic Verizon service comes with something like 2gb per month of use. So how much "data" is that in terms of what people normally use? What I'm asking here, for those who have similar 2gb (or 4gb, can't remember exactly), do you find yourself "running out" of data? Or running "over" and incurring huge charges for excessive data? Or do you find yourselves having "extra" data at the end of the month?

And...any other recommended thoughts/devices? Any tips/tricks for a new user? I'm sticking to the "free" or <$100 phones I can get from Verizon, so the iPhone 5 isn't an option nor are the newest 'droid based phones.

Thanks in advance! :ylsmoke:

Since durability is one of your main concerns, I would look into the Samsung Galaxy phones. I have dropped mine multiple times on pavement with no cover on it and it has not affected it one bit, on a 2 year old phone. If your stuck on the iphone just get an otter box or spend a little more and they make one that is guaranteed water proof. I cant remember the name but you actually test it by dunking the cover in water before you put it on your phone.

Iphone with a heavy duty case can't be beat. I would also get the latest version, it's only an extra $ 100.00, and then you get let, which makes a world of difference in speed, and there is a reason they come out with new models. The 5 is much more stable than the 4s, and gets better reception than the 4, which had antenna issues. I have a concrete company, and have had iphones since the 3g and have only had a problem when I made the mistake of taking it out of the case.
The Griffin Survivor is the best case I have found so far, but it is bulky.
Good luck!

I've been very happy with my i4 and Lifeproof case.

Not only does a good case protect your phone if you drop it but (more importantly, imo) it helps you hang on to the thing so you don't drop it in the first place. iPhones are slippery little devils in their natural state.

I think the iPhone 4s is the sweet spot on capability and price. Great camera, decent processor, Retina screen, still well within the iOS upgrade path (the software that runs it). The 5 is faster, slightly thinner and lighter, but has that wonky new connector that no one else has handy when you need one..... The Otterbox Defender series cases are bombproof and come with a great film applied screen protector that is so good you can't tell its on. Lifeproof would be my second choice. A bit thinner and more...svelte, but not as easy to use headphones or to dock and charge.

Jeesh, after that opening I thought you were going to say say something about getting your ham license. But, I see it's already too late for that! :bigbossHL:

Martin, how could you????? I have been using you as an example/reason to dump my smartphone!:Wow1:

That being said, I think I am going to switch to Verizon when my contract with T-Mobile ends in May. I was considering switching to a normal phone (I have so many computers around me, I don't need a smartphone.) Otherwise, I am leaning toward the Iphone with an OtterBox case. Casio makes a ruggedized smart phone, too - but it's an Android.

Well, ditching T-mobile is smart if you're planning on spending much time out West. You've probably already discovered that their coverage absolutely sux out here. Wife had T-mobile when we first started dating. If we went away for the weekend she'd just leave her phone at home because it was useless once we got outside the city limits.

agreed. i gave my iphone 4 w lifeproof case to my younger daughter. and, yes... it works underwater! i now have an iphone 5 with lifeproof case.

my wife had the otterbox case and switched to the lifeproof because it was thinner. and if you use the headset a lot you will have to use an adapter with the lifeproof and they are not cheap if you have to replace one. and when charging you have to use the newer/slimmer 30-pin cables or use an adapter.

Another one here for iPhone with LifeProof case. I'm still running the 4s till the next one comes out. If you don't want to wait for that one then get the iPhone 5. If your just starting out it's definitely better to have the slightly bigger screen. Also I'll warn you that you might not ever want to go back, and you might want the next model that comes out too. My advise is to get the biggest amount of storage you can afford. Once the new one comes out they stop selling those so it'll hold its value a little better. So far other than my original iPhone I've got pretty close to what I paid for my old iPhones by waiting till renew time. Good luck with whichever you choose. They are great little inventions.

I got me a "smart" phone last year because I was forced to monitor my email messages. I just got a used Droid (Verizon). I dont really browse the 'net on it so its sufficient.

Verizon is great out west
If you already have Verizon I would recommend keeping your unlimited plan and buying a phone off ebay...
My GF and I have unlimited Verizon smartphone plans from the good old days and pay about 65 a month for unlimited data, free tethering up to 5 gb...we don't use many talk minutes (less than 50/mos) and don't text much...
Switching to the new verizon share anything plans would raise our bills to around or over 100 a month for 2gb of data, but free texting...

I'd have to agree with a lot of the guys here. iPhone with a life proof case s the way to go. I went snorkeling for 2 hours with mine by accident and it didn't let a drop of water in.
