Living in a Shipping Container...

pass...

Why not just get a yurt? Or a pre-built house.

Yurt...expensive and either very high maintenance or not very long lasting IMHO.
Pre-built house...well, that depends on how you define that. Pay someone else to do what I have the skills and tools to do? That is not me. But say I took a container and put it in a garage or shop. Used the electrical and other facilities to pre-build my own unit in the comfort of a closed area...That I could maybe justify. That is one of the perks of this style of building, it can be done modular and trucked in sections. Assembled on site and be almost instantanious. But unlike the Yurt it would be there almost forever. And unlike a more traditional prefab...it has the steel structure to offer a much greater strength, resistance to rot, and should mother nature have a bad day and decide to cause chaos...I'll be ok.

unusual...

If you wanted to put it in the desert, here's a good concept you could copy to keep the heat down.

Thats a good point for those headed to the hot areas. Me? I want nothing else to do with the desert anymore. Over 4 years of my life spent in Iraq,Kuwait,Saudi, and El Paso Tx...not my bag baby!...No more! I'm headed where it snows! Mountains and trees and water and...stuff! wHOOPIEEEE!

My Idea

I like the stacking concept but am kinda leaning to this configuration.

There are many ways to do it. My quote was just one example.

This one cost way too much, but I like it! Just figure out how to do it cheaper!

I love the freedom of idea's with containers!

And Hey! There's your log sides! Dude Sweet!

perhaps.

Be cheaper to do a simple open floor plan steel building.

I suppose cost could go either way honestly. Depends on if your taking just total build cost, Value, or both? Are they both built with the same sq footage and using the same general engineering and materials?
Recycle value aside there are many ways to skin this proverbial cat and no way is "best, cheapest, or perfect". How its built and how one pays for it can also play into it too. If I was building my home in a container and could do it on weekends and vacation time fueled only by my labor and paychecks is that a savaings? Being able to "lock up" the jobsite when I'm away and knowing weather and other disasters will have no effect on it should be worth something right? Just more input from me..the OPP.Haha.

Only if you build not from container , you can not call your house a "Container recycle art "

Funny...

rebar is usually made from recycled steel, I guess since you can't see it once it is in concrete the "I RECYCLE!!!" factor goes waaay down...[/sarcasm]

I looked into it, containers at the time weren't that cheap. I was going to have to buy 5-6 of them to get kinda the square footage/ceiling height I wanted.

Was going to build something like this.

Then factor in the labor cost/time for burning out the walls...at least for me, I rather start from scratch. We decided not to build at all. It became even cheaper to buy an existing building. Saved a bundle. How is that for recyclin'!?

Yep, there you go. The conclusion we came to after researching using containers, can get a lot more space for far less money. At the time I think a 8X40' container was going for roughly $5000 then multiply that by 6 plus shipping cost, not sure what they are now, since we abandoned the idea.

Resale going to be horrible too on all but the very best builds. But the very best builds are going to be a couple hundred dollars a square ft. Quirky/different houses are usually a huge mistake when it comes to resale.

Local manufactured housing is a quick start and can be finished DIY. Rehab-able houses are sometimes not much more than land value. Lots of better options for 95% of people.

But I do like the creativity and spirit of people how have done these builds.

It came down to that too, resale is going to be in the gutter. I like the "idea" of a container house, but in the end just wasn't very practical.

We ended up buying a little old house and fixed it up. Even into today's market I can sell it for 3-4 times of what I have into it. Our next move is possibly into an old warehouse we found. Live in the back and have our business in the front. At least that is the plan for now.
