Locker / Gear setup...

Might be a stupid question but I'll ask it any way. When they talk about a Chrysler 8.25 or a Ford 9", they are talking about the diameter of the ring gear. My stupid question is, that is the outside diameter of the ring and not the inside, right?

Honestly, NO CLUE...

All I can say is that 8.25 is larger then D35... and seems to have reputation to hold up better a little...

My buddy on the red XJ has D35, and we both run identical tire size/lifts, and dont see much difference at this point...

I may be wrong but I think the measurement is the center of the gear mesh face. Also, there is more to the strength of a differential than the ring gear size.

I think once your buddy gets to a point where he needs to put the pedal to the metal and he puts a lot of torque on the 35 he'll see a difference pretty quick.

There is a Detroit locker for 27 and 29 spline 8.25s. I had thought there was an Ected locker too but I'm not seeing that on quadratec. I do see a limited slip though.

Well, seems like business side of things is going a bit better then I expected, so I will be able to get my gears/lockers done sooner then I hoped... :) :) :) :wings:

So, now i figured that may be just go selectable both front/rear... :)

Only problem - ARB seems to be the only choice... I didnt see a selectable Detroit from Chry8.25... :(

Detroit is full spool 100% of the time if I'm not mistaken. Really the ARB seems like a pretty good choice because then you've got an air compressor, you're killing two birds with one stone.

Detroit isnt a selectable, correct...???

ARB is the only option for a selectable into a Chry8.25, from what I understand... :( I was hoping I could get the E-Locker put in to the front and back... :)

No. A Detroit (or Aussie, LockRite, and a few others) are ratcheting automatic lockers. They require no input from you to lock and unlock. The axle shafts can (under various conditions, such as coasting through a turn) rotate at different speeds.

A spool does not ratchet. It physically fuses the right and left axle shaft together so that they cannot go at different speeds; you can duplicate this by effect welding your spider gears to your carrier. The ARB,when you elect to engage it, creates a spool condition - a solid locking of the two axle shafts.

As for the original question:

With 25% overdrive and 33" tires and a trailer >1500 lbs, I'd err on the side of 4.88 gears. In snow/ice, I'd NOT put an automatic locker in the front under any circumstances and would be very hesitant to do so in the rear. If you don't deal with snow/ice on the highway, well, I've never lived in such a place, so I don't know what's best.

Additionally, if you are dealing with snow and ice covered roads I'd be inclined to only install a manual locker that was a true open differential when unlocked (i.e. not a LSD when not engaged).

IIRC only the ARB and OX are open differentials when not engaged. But I could be wrong on that. I'm only interested in ARBs so haven't bothered to stay current with the newer offerings.
