Since some new people are coming on board and adding input, allow me to clarify:

I agree with the merits of keeping the lift amount low, doing it right the first time, not overdoing it, etc. That's what I did with my previous Frontier, as well as my old Discovery II. I'm pretty well versed in suspension theory and the pros and cons of lifted suspensions. The plan for this truck since the beginning was to install the OME HD suspension. That is still what is going to happen. The goal is to lift the truck two inches above stock height to better clear 32" tires. If I decide I want to run larger tires, this lift will allow me to fit 255/85R16s with zero issues. The Frontier, as it sits stock, is a little too low to the ground for me and the terrain I travel, so putting that extra couple inches under it will help immensely. The other reason for the suspension is load bearing capacity. When the mods are pretty much done, I will have heavy bumpers, a winch, the RTT, skids, sliders, and a bunch of gear. I don't want to sag or overload the suspension, even further reducing the ground clearance. The HD OME kit will be able to handle all that extra load easily, while keeping the truck farther from the ground. The other advantage is the OME springs will increase articulation. Yes, it will be expensive, but it will be worthwhile to have a complete suspension overhaul.

As for me mentioning PRG, the only reason I mentioned it is I was considering putting a spacer/shackle kit under the truck so I could gain precious ground clearance and be able to traverse rougher terrain than I am able to now, not for the looks (although I do like the way it'd look :)). I know this will not help with carrying a load, nor improve ride quality. The only reason I am even considering it is to get the belly off the dirt a little more. It would be a temporary install that would cost less than $250. Now, the odds of me actually doing that aren't very good, because it won't take me too long to afford order up the OME kit from Nisstec, which would render the cheap PRG kit redundant.

I hope this clears up some of the potential confusion. Back to our regularly scheduled madness. :)

I did the same thing to gain some clearance. I installed a 2.5" Front spacer, and a set of shackles in the rear and larger 285's on my Xterra. I also needed a couple extra inches in the terrain I travel. But Could not go for the whole suspension upgrade at the time. It was a cheap easy way to gain some hight, and put bigger tires on.( I had $100 total used spacers new shackles bought off a forum member who never used them) And have been saving for more suspension upgrades (TJM HD Extended travel front, upper arms, deaver A.A.L). No shame in running a spacer/shackle/aal as a temp. set up to get you a little more clearance.

So, interesting thing happened this weekend. We spent Friday night, Saturday, and Sunday doing some camping, I'll post pics later. On the highway on the way out, I was averaging 16 mpg. Okay, no problem, new tires need to break in. Doesn't take long to break them in. We spent two day exploring the trails in a new area, then drove home. On the return trip, same stretch of flat and straight highway, I got 23 mpg according to the computer. That's a 1 mpg gain over my old tires. Now, I have no problem if that's the real mileage... But it seems a little high. It's plausible that I am actually getting that on the highway, so what I'm going to do is run the same trip again in the next few days. I'll fill up before I leave, do the two hour drive, then fill up again and do the calculation by hand.

Sounds like you got one hell of a tail wind on the return trip.. haha

Cooke City Area, July 2014

So this weekend we went out for some more exploring. Just 45 minutes from my house is the Beartooth Pass, one of most beautiful drives through some of the most rugged mountains in the country. Across the pass, in the middle of the Beartooth Mountains, sits Cooke City. Cooke City was once a booming mining town, but since the late 1930s it's been a haven for outdoorsy types like me. Thanks to the old mining operations, there are tons of trails and FS roads running through the mountains.

Coming over the pass is always a treat.

We pulled into our camping spot around 10 PM and set up. Beret and I are getting really good at setting up efficiently, and the others are starting to use systems that are equally good. MTWheeler is using a fold up cot in the back of his D21, and our friend Nik just got a Tepui Ayer that they mounted on his girlfriend's new 2006 Xterra. We had a jolly night around the fire and woke up bright and early Saturday to hit the trails. Well I say bright. It started raining around 2:30 AM and continued until 9:00. Everything was pretty soggy. We started out trying an easy trail, but very quickly got stopped by snow.

We started on the way down and stopped at some of the old wrecked mining buildings to investigate.

We attempted going up Goose Lake Jeep Trail, a seriously rough and rugged trail that makes it's way up to a picturesque lake. Unfortunately, we found out the trail was blocked by snow about a mile in.

We sort of abandoned that side of the mountains and headed for a pass on the other side.

The view at the top was spectacular. There is a lake on the other side of the pass, but we couldn't make it because the top was, you guessed it, covered by snow.

We had stopped for lunch at a beautiful camping spot on the way up, so we turned around and set up camp there. We watched a storm roll by to the south and enjoyed dinner and a little target shooting.

We woke up the next morning and headed back over the pass to enjoy an alpine lake.

After enjoying the view, we headed back towards home. Overall, it was a fun weekend.

Man, your photos are killing me ... really like that black and white one. Also think that the sunset picture with the X is TOTM worthy on NewX ... but those folks may not be over there.

Funny stuff on the mileage ... calculating by hand is always a good check, are you reading from the trip computer, currently? If you're wondering whether your odometer is correct, you can verify from your speedo ... if it checks against a GPS (even off of your phone) the odo readings should be close enough; and then you don't have to run a measured course and check odo distance against GPS distance, though that's another way to check.

Wouldn't surprise me to see you get 23 (with the right conditions), but 23 vs. 16 on the same stretch of road when there's no real grade to it; that's the odd part.

Thanks, I really enjoy taking the photos! With scenery like that, it's tough to get bad shots. :)

I'm hoping that the hand calculations will help get my numbers right. I'm currently going off the computer. I know it needs time for the numbers to get accurate, and I let it compute for the whole hour drive. Ended up evening out at 23. Verified the speedo is right as soon as I got the new tires. Got a GPS app on my phone to verify speedometers, and the speedo on the truck is dead on accurate, even more so than they were before the tire change.

Getting 23 is definitely plausible. I was getting 22 mpg on this drive before, and my tach is telling me I'm running around 300-400 rpm less at the same speed. Plus, the new tires aren't that much heavier than the old ones. So, it could be that the tires have improved the mileage. We'll see when I double check.

Fantastic pictures man! Always drool over them... Haha!

Thanks bud! Hahaha! I really liked the way the one with you on the truck turned out.

Took my truck in to get the tires rebalanced. I noticed a shaky feeling when driving it, and my mpg is all over the map. Hoping the balancing will fix it and the numbers will make some kind of sense.

So, the numbers have evened out a bit after balancing, but I'm still getting an intermittent vibration at highway speeds. It's better, but not great. I'm beginning to think I need to cut my losses and sell the tires for a set of Cooper AT3s. Need to do some thinking on it though.

That was quick, sure it's the tires?
