Looking For A Winch Hook

I am running a 7/16" Amsteel blue winch rope from Custom Splice, with a standard thimble on the end.......it has performed great so far!

I am currently using this hook with my 7/16" rope:

The hook works good, but the opening is just way too small!!!

I know I could just use a screw pin shackle, but this makes the hook more readily available to be stolen

I was hoping to get a hook that attaches somewhat permanently to the rope/thimble

Looking for suggestions on a good hook set up, that isn't $200

What you need is a half link hook. Look for a true Gunnebo if you can.

Also, I see most have a chain Grade 80 and Grade 100

Which grade is rated for which poundage?

I'd rather have something stronger, of course, as long as the size is still useable

I used a Gunnebo G-10-8, which is rated as Grade 100 with a working load limit of 5,700 lbs with a 4x proof. It's a 5/16" pin. It's probably technically undersized for the Warn XD9000 I have, but comparing it to the hook it came with I have to chuckle if it really is. A 3/8" hook seemed like it would be ridiculously big at the end of my Amsteel 5/16" rope.

I'm sorry, I don't remember where I got it. I ordered it from a rigging supply I think in Seattle. If I'm not mistaken I think Viking Offroad stocked them.

Edit to add, here you go.

Why use a hook at all?

http://factor55.com/prolink-xxl/ would be my choice. I personally don't like an open system when winching, so using the ProLink gives you the same security and strength a Safety Thimble does. When I ordered the synthetic for the Power Wagon, I had Viking use their Safety Thimble, and when we put the winch on the Jeep, the first thing I did was cut off the stock hook and add a ProLink.

Thanks for the link......I have not heard of YOKE brand, are they good?

3/8" Half Link Hook is $45 and is rated for 28,000 lbs

What does the 3/8" measurement mean? The size of the pin?

I use hooks like these:

I think I got them from MasterPull.
I like them because the gate can't get damaged so there's no risk of cutting corners and using an open hook.
I don't like them because they require routine maintenance to keep the operating smoothly. But that's pretty minor.

I am trying to prevent theft as much as possible.........I have had shackles and d-rings stolen too many times.

The self closing hooks with the hammer links are a good idea, but I want less parts at the business end.....less parts=less chance of breakage IMHO

I am forced to go with something that has a half-link hook:
