IMO,

I would go with Gen 1, and I love gen 2.5 (currently owning it).

The look of Gen 1 is just so damn nostalgic and ************ looking. They are just very hard to come by, and it was actually my first choice. However, I accidentally found Gen 2.5 with 74K mile, and it is hard to let it passes by so I grabbed.

There are pros and cons to both models, but if I have to pick between the two. Definitely, it will be Gen 1. Good luck!

Ive had 4 Mitsubishi Monteros....3 in Panama....and now my last one up here in North Carolina. I like the Gen 3 ...2005 Monty Ltd that I just bought in Texas for 9900. The vehicle is in almost mint condition...only 90k miles..( for an "05~!)... Midnight Black( perfect paint)...Dark grey Charcoal leather seats...New VisionWarrior 17x 8" cast rims... I m looking to order the Adventure Design 3 pack of Skid plates in December and probably also put in new beefier Bilstein Shocks and coil springs. Other than that....MAYBE a new radio/CD over the OEM unit in there now. I have NEVER been stuck or unable to drive in remote trail/tracks/ mud...snow...whatever...in my Montero(s).... IMHO...I think they have the BEST 4wd system ...as evidenced by the fact that the Montero/Pajero...won the Paris to Dakar Rally race ...quite a few times during the 12 yrs that it was held in Afrika. Now I think they hold the rally in South America...like Patagonia or Chile.. Safe Driving in whichever Monty you purchase. Do your homework...hunt around nationwide!.. Not a lot of them for sale. I bought mine for 9900.00... it originally retailed for 46, 500 bucks! heres some pics...

I had a 91 with a 5 speed, and with the 3.0 that is what I would recommend for sure. Regarding miles, 98k verses 200k sounds like a big difference, but its not because all those same parts are still over 25 years old and are likely to degrade with time as much as mileage. The 98k truck is likely to be cleaner, and potentially less rusty, but no assurances of that. Your baseline maintenance efforts with either truck will be identical. If you live where there are hills, go with the manual. If you live where you need the locker, and don't want to add one to the manual, then get the auto.

My very good friends wife's 2001 3.5 overheated. He's selling it. Never even been off roaded. I'll post for him when I get details from him. I know he wants less than 1k for it. It's very clean.
