Cap and rotor and wires. Bro. Basic and simple, but can make a world of difference as you just found out. Cheap and easy fix though. Have you taken a look at the plugs?

This is awesome. I love seeing other FSJ's getting built and used the way they were intended to be. Literally the perfect 4x4 for a family!
If you fret working on 20something year old FSJ suspension and drivetrain, try working on a 40 something year old setup! It's all easy though in reality. These are pretty straight forward rigs when you get down to it.
Are you not able to ditch the smog crap in CO?

I second the camping and wheeling pic. ^^^
But as far as the smog goes in CO... all depends on what county you live in.. if you live in aurora to denver or boulder or pretty much any thing in between. You need smog. But if you live some where like say glennwood. (Western slope of the continental divide). Smog is not required.

Yeah we have some weird stuff like that in Nevada too. Actually the laws are more strict than CA. In all of Clark county (read: Las Vegas area) and 'urban areas' of washoe county (read: only Reno) we have to smog check any. Shucks that is newer than 1967. But we can also file for exemption if we have classic vehicle plates and promise to only drive 5000 miles or less a year (rolling my eyes).

Hey Dr Marneaus. Good to see you on the thread. Like 4xchinook4 pointed out, my waggy still gets emissions tested every two years out here. That being said, I'm planning on fuel injecting it to get a bit more power and keep it running clean. Right now, I'm looking at using Megasquirt with a 90s chevy throttle body injection setup.
So, I don't have any camping pics for you guys (yet!) but I do have a few pictures that I thought were kind of interesting. I got my first chance to play around with the new suspension this weekend. Overall, it flexes and rides well and I think it'll get even better as the springs break in more. I had a chance to grab some interesting data while I was at it... the difference in flex with the sway bar on versus off. It makes a bigger difference than I thought. (roughly 20" vs 24") Check it out.
The test ramp before climbing:
Sway bar on: (as far as I could climb in the wet dirt)
Sway bar off: (on top with travel to spare)
Adding movement in the front axle keeps the cab more level which, in turn, allows the rear axle to flex better. Here are some more pics with the sway bar removed:

Love the Wagoneer... I will be making her into a camping rig also. What she lacks in MPG she more than makes up in STYLE!

By the way. On the topic of smog. Fiel injection is great. And is definatly the way to go, in yours and i case. However.. dont forget about the visual side to CO. so what ever vehile you decide to adapt to the "waggy" . Youll need to adapt all the emission junk from that fuel injected motor of that year. Just a warning.

Are you saying that, when I fuel inject it, I need to get fuel injection equipment that was offered by Jeep in 1989? I'm planning on just getting a throttle body injectors from an early 90s chevy.
Also, I went back to the loading docks yesterday to get a measurement of how the Waggy flexes. I took a measurement and my buddy took one later on. My measurement came out to ~25.5" vertical while his was only 24.25" vertical. My inclination is to go with my measurement because he stopped me from climbing at the first sound of the rear tire skidding. (the rear was on a patch of deep sand and I bumped the throttle) At any rate, here are a few pictures:

Haha. Well bro. At any rate thats some real decent flex... thumps up for sure. And no. Sorry, i kond of thought thatd would have been a difficult one to read. Heres what im saying:
You want the fuel injection offered on a chevy. Like oh say there 4.3 L v6... you will need the smog equipment also from that 4.3 L v6.
Ex: So if you take the fuel injection from a 98 chevy. You will also need to take the smog equipment from so said 98 chevy.

^Thanks! It seems like every time I drive this thing, someone stops by and comments on it. Since I have the stock carb on it, it still gets "decent" gas mileage too... 13-14mpg.

Yeah its a great conversation starter...
About your swap... Im pretty lucky here in San Antonio i just have a "visual" inspection. The guy just looks to see if i have a catalytic converter connected and thats it. Since i dont have the space or time to do a complete swap myself, im going to order a remanufactured engine from S&J engines. You cant beat there 7yr 100,000mile warranty...I called and they said the waranty is good even if i did the install it myself, and would put that in writting for me... I also asked if they would install And warranty a cam (they have their own like the EB performer)and said it would also be covered for an aditional 75bucks. That combined with a FAST EFI kit should keep me going for a while.
