Great pics and story. Thats the exact type of exploring I like to do in the wag. Just getting out there to see what one can see!

Thanks guys! Since you guys liked this trip, I'll be sure to post up more exploration threads up in the future.

Just out of curiosity, what is the furthest/longest trip you have taken in the wag so far?

Hey doc,
Here are my estimates:

Over the road... probably 500 miles or so.
Offroad... probably only 20 miles or so.

I was planning on doing a San Rafael Swell trip this year, going about 100 miles away from the nearest town, but my schedule didn't make that possible. I might be able to swing it next year, though. The big trip I have planned is to drive to Ouray and hit Hurricane Pass, California Gulch, Engineer Pass, Cinnamon Pass, Red Mtn. Pass, Yankee Boy Basin and find Ironton Ghost Town. It will be a 4-5 day trip, little over 600 miles on the road and probably somewhere between 25 and 50 miles of wheeling.

Out of curiosity... Why do you ask? (want to visit CO and wheel some Wagoneers together? :) )

Nice bro. Did some exploring myself this weekend. Near the town of caribou. Long live the sense of exploring .
Sounds like fun. Where's Caribou?

Honestly just curious. I'm always interested to see how far and long people push these things on what types of trips and how much they trust them by embarking on the aforementioned trips.

Your rig is 16 years newer than mine and seems to have a lot of 'refreshing' done to the engine so I'm assuming is likely much more reliable. 1989 is pretty much a modern vehicle though he FSJ's still didn't have fuel injection at tha point.

FSJ's, by large, are neither efficient nor particularly reliable, so it's just interesting to me.

I roll mine through Nevada where are are commonly on 75-100 mile stretches between towns , and that is on state highways. It's just s topic of interest to me.

Furthest I have traveled on roads in one trio is probably about 600 miles over a weekend. I have driven it to Ely a handful of times and that's 500 round trip just getting there and back. Furthest incone stretch was the drive to Reno when I moved this year, 480 non stop miles.

I would absolutely love to drive out to the FSJ invasion in Ouray one year but that's 900 miles each way so I don't know if it'll ever happen.

If I had to get in the truck and drive across the country I suppose I would without too much hesitation but I doubt it would do it without a really good reason.

Yeah, if you ever get near this part of the country, we should wheel together. And you're right, I bought this rig with a only 2,000 miles on a basic rebuild. Since then, I've put over 10,000 miles on it and it's been totally reliable. (I've driven from 5,000 ft at my house all the way up to around 13,000 ft without any issues!)

From the sound of it, you go farther off the beaten path than I have so far. It's good to hear that you trust your rig enough to keep doing it! Yet another reason that I can't complain about the AMC 360!

Absolutely. You're aware of the FSJ Invasion in Ouray every year right?

I dont know if I really go further than you, and I certainly dont trust it all that much haha. Often times I'm driving around with a knot in my stomach paying attention for any abnormal sound or smell among the dozens of "normal" noises and smells haha

I'm running a 1987 engine with duraspark ignition so it's the same generation as yours would have been, but hopefully some day before too long I can go the way of fuel injection.

Yes sir, I MIGHT go to the FSJ invasion this year. I'll be in the PNW for a week in July, coming home on the 14th, so leaving for the invasion on the 15th is probably too close. Who know, though. I might be able to convince Wifey to head up there on the 16th and stay till the 18th.

As for fuel injection... I want to fuel inject my rig too. Right now, the carb runs great (either refurbed or new when the engine was done, is my guess) but I really want the total reliability of fuel injection. I never want to worry about cold starts, hot starts, altitude and all the other stuff that can be a pain with carbs... especially since the Waggy is a daily driver and the baby hauler!

Which fuel injection setup are you thinking about? I'm thinking about snagging Blake's setup when he get's his 8.1L installed but I'm not sure about the 50 state legality of that.

Either junk yard GM TBI take off (already have an ECM for it), or a setup from Bill on binderplanet, which is GM TBI as well but he sells it as a full kit including HEI, and will burn as many chips as you need him to to get it all dialed in. I'm not worried about any legality of it from state to state

It's not my daily but given the distances I drive it and the variations in altitude I would like it to stay reliable.

But that's all a ways down the road. I REALLY need to do something about my headliner.

Just an aside. Friends went to Africa in about 1969, while their father was working with USAID. They shipped their Wagoneer over and shipped it back when they returned.
They never had a problem with it.

^ I was thinking about getting tuning services from Bill and learning about tuning from what he does along the way.

WOW. Do you have any pictures of it? I'd love to learn more about that trip.

I might have found a deal on an OEM Jeep trailer hitch. Do any of you guys know anything about hitches? Is there anything nicer about OEM Jeep over, say, BJ's Offroad or similar?

I've installed a few, repaired a few and built a few. Mostly it goes to cost the of them and how you are going to use them. Tow a tent trailer or be used as an anchor point for some HD winching? Neighbors son is on his third hitch. He hauls hay for a neighbor farmer with his F350 4X4 diesel during harvest. The next step is to go to a goose neck if he breaks the last one.

^I'm hoping to get a camper trailer someday. (roughly 4,000 lb loaded) I'd also like to use it as a my rear recovery point. So, my thought is that I probably want to get a 5,000 lb / 500 lb tongue weight setup. It turns out that the OEM hitch I found is only the 3,500 lb version so I'm thinking about holding off and getting this:

Any opinions on it? Also, any idea what drilling is required? (that makes me nervous on a rust prone rig...)
