WELL !!! DONE !!! nice job on the chassis from brake down to where it's at now.

The bags & arms are tempting... I'd echo the sentiments concerning the brakes, I'm willing to bet they're worth every cent...

Again... NICE...

Thanks Curt...

I'm not sure what the brakes will come out to (probably about $200 I figure) and I don't want to have to wire up the vehicles with controllers etc, but you are probably right. What has been crossing my mind more than anything is a method to install an e-brake for camping with the trailer separate from a vehicle. I was hoping I could come up with something on my own.

Regardless I'm sure the trailer brakes on descents would be really nice....

Nice work!

If you want an emergency brake I can supply you with the parts or part numbers for the hubs with parking brake capability.

I can also supply you with a parking brake assembly, handle and cables. You'd have to modify it to make it work, it's very do-able, just takes time to set it all up correctly.

Thanks Martyn, appreciated!

So far the costs on it (and time) are already over budget and I haven't even bought the sheet metal yet (doh!). But I'm still considering it strongly. I imagine there is an electric brake version with ebrake capability as well? The M416 came with a really nice e-brake lever that bummed me out that I wasn't going to be able to use it...

I'm hoping I can talk a mod into changing the title of this thread to

M416 Build (Was "starting from scratch - recommendations?")

thanks!

Nice job on this build! :Wow1: Yes you can have both electric brakes and a mechanical parking brake. My trailer is running Dexter axles and hubs and they are eletronic controled drum brakes with a mechanical parking brake that is actuated by cable. It's a nice set up for towing and camping.

I do like the design just don't want it to break. Where your shocks mount to the trailing arms you cut out for the shock clearence but it looks like a 90degree angle. That is a high stress point and will break but if you put a little radius there it will be a whole lot stronger and not crack or break over time.

Like the design and think the setup is right on and very stout aside from what I have suggested.

It's a good question. That notch was mandatory for the shock clearance. I've had experience breaking shock mounts before so I know exactly what you are talking about. When I came up with that design to tell you the truth I wasn't too worried. It's still 1/4" and doubled up. Truthfully I was more worried about the welds breaking as the initial welds were me on the floor welding upside down which is always tough.

So it's a good question... I'll be down there today. My engineer buddy will be with me again, I'll be curious on his opinion too. The nature of the design is the shock will be getting worked extra hard so it is a good question and I'll be re-evaluating it... I still have some touchup with the black paint so I wouldn't mind fixing it if it came to that.

Since we are talking about shocks and their placement on a trailer. I would like to install a set on my trailer. It did not come with shocks. Is there a place I can by a multipurpose attachment point for trailer shocks?

Andre, want to split a gallon of the tan paint? It would go well with my dune beige 40, in fact I may just paint the 40 that color if it is that nice.

At the request of Dieselcruiserhead, I changed the name
of this thread from "M416 starting from scratch -- recommendations?"
to "M416 Build."

Hey Fax,
That sounds great. I had no idea what I was going to do with all that tan paint anyway. If you paint your cruiser though be careful as you really have to lay it on carefully... I'll give you a ring on Monday to discuss & order as it might take a week or two.. :) The black is in stock and I'm considering the UV protectant clear coat that should only cost maybe $20-$30 as well...

Opps Fax, sorry I haven't had a chance to give you a buzz. Anyway, we put it back together with not a lot of work, mostly planning and some electrical stuff. But there are good photos...

First, my buddy Chen (the engineer/hot rodder/ Audi fanatic) was back in town and helped me out again. It was a really lazy day on my end, I didn't even get changed to work on it so I basically lolligagged around and mostly ordered Chen around and had a lot of fun :). We also came up with some neat design stuff for the trailer that I think you guys will enjoy as well... Nin-Chen-do in action...

Paint in the shop. It was hanging out in the shop for a week so it's a little dusty but also has a little residue or discoloration from too much air in the gun but it still looks very good...

Some of the discoloration from the air gun and again some residual dust. But it turned out excellently and it has 2-3 good coats that look awesome...

And more close up and the air bag inflated. This part was really cool :) It is about 7 inches and will rest at about 5.5-6" so it looks more normal. But it was still very cool. Only 12psi to get up there. So pretty neat to see these bags at these inflation levels. The suspension feels... Awesome...
