Mac help.

So my new PB is giving me fits. I was using it and went to help the wife with the baby, when I get back it is downloading some software updates and I cancel it because I didn't know what they were. My wife calls me and I walk away again and when I get back it is restarting itself. My problem is that since that restart it will not log onto our wireless server, when I try it times out. Any thoughts on what I can try?

My advice would be to make all updates be approved manually, rather than automatic.

Try restarting the wireless modem/router just in case it needs resetting

Then try to connect to the internet using an Ethernet cable to make sure the computer will connect. Change your preferences through the network icon.

I would check the configuration for the wireless set up using the network and make sure you are trying to connect to your network and not someone else’s.

Don't worry too much about it downloading updates. It will always ask for your password BEFORE installing them, so you can cancel at that point if you don't know what it is doing.

So when I go into preferences and there are the different types of connections on the right with their red or green indicators, the airport indicator is yellow.

What does it say with the yellow wireless connection? Green is 'connected' and red is 'not connected'. Does it give you some indication why the wireless connection is partial? What wireless router are your using?

Just opened up my PB to have a look.

The airport light should be green. Change the "Show:" from Network Status to Airport and make sure your "Airport ID:" has a number after it and the "By Default, join" is Automatic

Open "Internet Connect" and check that the:
"Airport Power" ON
"Network" gives the name of your network
"Signal Level" Shows some bars.
"Base Station ID:" should have the number of your wireless modem
"Status" Should say connected to "name of your network"

Sounds like either the login for the wireless is incorrect or the settings on the wireless router are incorrect. You may try logging into the router and see what encryption mode it is using.

Do you have an Ethernet connection in the back of the airless modem/router? If so plug the PB in via that and see if you can connect.

All of the issues we have had with the wireless has been on the modem/router end of things. So if you can't connect using the Ethernet cable through the wireless then you are going to have to restart the wireless or reset it.

Other thoughts; if you have the airless DSL line wired from a router then you may have hardware problems between the router and the airless. Try connecting to the router using a different port and short Ethernet cable.

Sorry shooting in the dark here. Can you explain how your airport is hard wired from the phone line to the DSL modem to a router to the airless?

The wireless mdem is a Westeel versalink and is just hooked into a phone/dsl line. If I hook the PB up with an ethernet cable it connects to the internet fine. The reason I am I suspect the downloads is that it was fine right up until the restart. I really appreciate the help, bear with me I am like a caveman when it comes to computers. :mixed-smiley-030:

Sloan , It's an issue with the router it's happened to me in the past. Start by unplugging the wireless router and modem for about a minute so they have no power. Also reset set the router , there should be a little button on it somewhere. Then fire everything up and see if that works if not you will have to delete the current wireless setup and reinstall it. Hope this helps let me know if I can assist you in any more.

Need more info on your particular wireless router( brand), and internet connection. Cable, DSL Modem/brand?

You will have to go into Network Pref's -Make sure your locations is set to automatic - then select the assist me button - chose diagnostics - have all your proper numbers for internet config - input those numbers - then your password.

If nothing is working post a screen shot - by using; command + shift + 3 marque drag the area you want the screen shot of.

FWIW we constantly had drop off failure issues with the Linksys router before we installed our new Airport Extreme router. The last 2-months, since installing the Mac system including the AE, zero connection/router issues (same DSL modem on both sides of the change out). Your issue may or may not be with your router but FWIW...
