Iā€™m basically going back full circle to the start of my travels with my wife. Back in @ ā€˜84, we took our first trip together in a Nissan Kingcab Frontier, with a 6ā€™ long, cab high shell (and RR).

Starting in mid May, we traveled over 30 days in it, AZ to Yellowstone, up to Jasper, across Southern B.C. and over to the PNW Coast (and Vancouver Is) and then home via US 101.

Lotsa rainy days and cold nights, crammed into the low roof shell. Still had a blast.

Imagine this one in red:

Love these trucks. My neighbor growing up had one in red and drove the snot out of it for 20 years.

Just get a full size regular cab, they are pretty big inside.

Also, extra cabs with side rear seats probably don't pass crash standards for the rear occupants. Adding onto that, the market for extra cab mid-size trucks is just too small.

The list of people who swore they'd buy a manual Bronco, then it had to be a V6, and after that came out, they still didn't buy one. Or the cloth seat LandCruiser people. They are out there, but not so many that Toyota hasn't had to discount them to move. Many people say they want an extra cab mid-size (or compact) truck with a 6' bed, but the market of people who actually put down the money is too small. My Dad was in that group as well, until he realized that a fence post fits into a 55" bed with the tailgate down. šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

From the above linked article:

ā€œThis Ford Maverick Lobo recently popped up on Facebook Marketplace with an asking price of $47,345. Thatā€™s a whole heck of a lot for a Maverick, and to make matters worse, itā€™s priced that way due to a ā€œmarket adjustment on top of MSRP plus dealer adds.ā€ā€¦itā€™s not the only Lobo being sold with a dealer markup. A quick search on KBB shows that there are several listed nationwide with sticker prices higher than their MSRPs, pushing them dangerously close to the $50,000 mark and even beyond it in at least one case.ā€

Sometimes you really have to shake your head in bewilderment at the brilliant car dealers who are desperately trying to bring consumers back to their auto lots to buy their over priced vehicles, when inventories of unsold cars are sitting at record levels in many areas.

There still seem to be some brainiac marketing managers out there who believe that advertising vehicles at prices well over their MSRPā€˜s is a grand way to get folks to come in and over spend their money.

BTW, These deals are called ā€œbend over, lube xtra, salesā€œ by those of us with with intelligence and superior money management skills.šŸ¤£

I mentioned elsewhere in this forum (or the other Bound one) a couple years ago, we were on a Ford lot (only because I was having my GMC serviced at the Chevy dealer that was part of the same family next door) and the Mavs there all had a steep, steep "Market Adjustment." F. U., Mr. Etadjustment (1st name Mark, see what I did there?)

It was nuts and they were trying to sell the newly released Mavs with a wild mark up and the Lobo didnt even exist yet. They were XLT's or something...needless to say we walked off the lot.

I really enjoy and appreciate your comments and advice guys.

You should know tho that the size of the truck I get is dictated unfortunately by my need to keep it parked inside my garage.

Admittedly itā€™s frustrating as heck, but no 4x4 full size trucks with a pop up shell will fit.

Last year I finally had to give up on getting a pop up shell on my full sized rig and felt compelled to sell itā€¦my low mileage K2500 HD x-cab short bed beast. But it barely fit into my garage and I couldnā€™t put anything on it other than a cab high shell.

At times, Iā€™ve been so stymied by this problem that I even considered selling our AZ home, just to be able to get the truck/camper combo I wanted. That really wasnā€™t an affordable or intelligent solution though.

In the past year Iā€™ve contacted numerous sellers here who had nice Tacoā€™s with pop up shells. None of them fit tho!

So yeah, Iā€™m stuck (as Iā€™ve said) looking for something smaller.

And thus itā€™s onwards and upwardsā€¦with something else!

Yesā€¦canā€™t park any sort of ā€˜camperā€™ if visible to annoyingly complaining neighbors (and HOA rules)
Not even a little popup wedge that lives on the truck? Seems pretty crazy... I mean... you could very convincingly argue that it isn't a "camper" at all, but just a shell.

Earlier you mentioned wanting AWD for the rainy PNW. I'm sure you know that the PNW isn't wet in the summer...?

83-85 ish door height is pretty good. Both of mine are literally 1-2 inches barely over my roof bar on my Expedition which is like 71-72 high.

I have often thought about this issue. The Maverick with a hard side popup shell would still fit. The Honda definitely not. Figure the cab over section us about 8-10ā€ thick and has 3-5 inch gap between roof and cap overhang.

Lots of Mavericks on the lots right now I suspect Ford was trying to load up inventory before the T factor kicked in. Just bought my wife a Corsair same shared platform as the Maverick- NO ONE is buying cars right now below msrp is definitely the reality. Except Lithia Toyotaā€™s they donā€™t sell anything without a 3000+ markup over msrpšŸ˜†

Yep. Currently lots of good deals out there. Just got 20K off MSRP on a vehicle a couple weeks ago.

That being said MSRP on my 22 F150 was 67K to build the closest possible F150 now (some features & options have been deleted for 24/25) is 83K!

This was for an XLT!!! So, 20K off now is like getting an 'okay' deal 3 years ago, lol

But, I'd act sooner rather than later as I just read on average costs will be going up and MSRP's will be up approx 3-6K.

Based on the content sheet on the Corsair Mexico and Canada parts $4000-$6000 easily could be added by the tariff.

Just fyiā€¦.

Being encouraged by some to look into getting a full sized truck, I checked 2024 avg height of f150 4x4 trucks.

Avg Ht = 6ā€™7ā€ (79ā€) and my garage entry is @83-86ā€.

So nope, Iā€™m not going the full size truck route.

Love my full size but it does not fit under my car port. That's for Lady Beagle's Terrain. If it dont fit, you MUST acquit!

I have spoken in the past about our maverick. We have an fx4 AWD with tow package. We have a homestead and this little truck has worked harder than most half ton in the area.

Itā€™s a great little truck, I would probably buy it again because of the price. Itā€™s great on gas, itā€™s comfortable (i come from 1ton trucks), all the creature comfort we could want. I have hauled 1800lbs of concrete in the bed, towed my 5000lbs +trailer tractor.

However the drawbacks in my opinion are:
In the area very poor worksmanship at the dealers. Not sure if itā€™s a general Ford issue or localized.
4.5ā€™ bed
Wiper cowl gets full of ice and leaves
Tailgate too close to bumper
Lack of torque if stuck from a stop (IG: mud, ice) you canā€™t get it to rock because of the turbo lag and lack of low end torque.

Thanks, thatā€™s a pretty good user experience right up for the Maverick.

Iā€™m finding the Maverick XL hybrids listed at a local dealer as cheap as the low 20s.

They seem to have a good supply of them.

From doing more homework on the Maverick, I found out that the hybrid comes only in front wheel drive and you have to get the non-hybrid if you want to all wheel drive.

Thatā€™s kind of a tough choice because the hybrid is rated to be very effective for daily short driving, and would be nice for saving money on fuel

But again, my higher desire would be to have an all wheel drive vehicle.

I did read today that the Ridgeline is built in America and so the tariff impacts on. It shouldnā€™t be as bad, if at all.
