Maxxis Bighorn MT-762 tires

Bump...I am looking for a new set of 255/85r16 tires and the bighorns keep popping into the picture. Reviews are all over the place: good sidewall, bad sidewall, loud as heck, not too loud...not sure what to think. The only consensus I can find is that they are sticky on rocks, which is good for me in NH, and they wear fast. Oh yeah, and they are cheaper...

Any recent opinions?

Not a new opinion, but my old opinion matches your summary-- Grippy, loud, wear fast-ish.

If I needed a mud tire in 255/85 today I'd certainly consider the Bighorn. However, I prefer to run something with a bit less void and noise, a commercial traction design.

This is one newer choice if it interest you:

The Maxxis Bighorns MTs have been the worst mud-terrain tire that I have used to-date. This is when comparing them to the Toyo Open Country M/Ts, BFG KM2s, and Cooper STT Pros. The Big Horns wore incredibly fast, chipped easily, and, in comparison to the other M/Ts I've used, under performed in mud and rock. I wheel A LOT and these tires simply did not cut it for me. After only 11 months of use I ditched them for the Coopers. The Maxxis were are also a smaller 35" tire than other 35s I've used.

No ambiguity in that opinion...lol! I wheel a lot too, and I currently run 235/85r16 STT Pros. I love my PROs, but am thinking I would like a 33 for more clearance. I would love to go STT Pro 285s, but they are too heavy for my 4.10s in my 4-banger. I am looking at Bighorns or St Maxx in 255/85.

Did you ever have a puncture with the bighorns?

Never punctured the Maxxis.

What where the problems on rocks? Not grippy enough? Thanks for the info BTW

Yea, the Maxxis span too much. I felt they slipped frequently, and as I mentioned previously, chipped easily. I've run the Coopers on the same exact Trail and they passed with ease, no slippage or rocking (no pun intended) back and forth.

I've also taken both the Maxxis and the Coopers to the Peten jungle in Guatemala. The first trip with the Maxxis I winched like 10 times a day. With the Coops, I winched 0, and went even deeper into the jungle with 60 kilometers of nothing but mud. I even disengaged the 4-low and still had no issues. Same vehicle (had the vehicle restored and change of color).

I've run Bighorns in 265/75R16 for the last ~30k miles. They have a good amount of tread left and work well offroad. That said, they are very loud and do not work well in snow. I'm going to move to a KO2 soon (or something similar) due to the noise.

There are certainly worse choices than the Cooper S/T MAXX... I'm digging them on a couple rigs in a few sizes currently ;)

A lot of the guys I ride with use them, they are a great all around tire - there is no comparison on the market really. The only thing I worry about with them is rock crawling. I am coming from STT PROs, which are awesome on rocks. The Maxx's tread voids are much narrower. Nothings perfect, I know.
