Maxxis Bighorn MT-762 tires

Found this tire test from an Australian mag. The Bighorns perform very well. Some interesting results. The article is less of a comparison test of different brands and more of a comparison of different tread types.

Interesting discussion.
I'm running a set of 265/75/16 retreads on my 01 Cherokee. They're far too heavy at 60 lbs each.
I wanted those maxxis 255/85's, but 57 lbs, I need to lose weight.

Redline- my xj is geared for 33's. It weighs 4000 lbs, do you think I'd be happy with the load e km2? It's much lighter than the bighorn.

I wish all companies would offer load d tires in that size!

In 255/85- my memory is that the old BFG KM were 51-lb, but the KM2 is up to 55-lb in 255/85. I would not run the KM2 just because they are a mere 2-lb less per tire, I don't think that is enough difference to feel or to matter.

I prefer the Bighorns over KM2 on my 4Runner, but that’s more a statement about the vehicle than the tires. Though Bighorns are not a slow wearing tire, they work/grip great, and are soft & flexible. Bighorns have scored very well a couple times in extensive 4WD Action Magazine tests (Australian).

I have not run KM2s long enough to know about wear, but my guess is they will (or can) wear longer than Bighorns.

I didn't care for load range E tires on my 4,500-lb. TJ Rubicon, D was better and is still my preference for as long as they are available.

How are you all still liking the Maxxis? I'm in need of a new set of tires and have been going back and forth between the Maxxis, MT Baja MTZ, Hankooks and the stand by BFG at's. After not caring for the KM2's I told my self I'd stay away from MT's. BUT, big but. Now driving an 80 series that has far better road manners than my Tundra and the fact that my cruiser is seeing many more trails I'm re-thinking a MT
I have always really liked Maxxis mtb tires and the prices are just about buy 4 and get the 5th free.
I will still keep my Yoko it go72 winter tires that continue to amaze me in the 285 size.

I have not been using a set of Bighorns for a while. I too got tired on running a mud tire, and have mostly been running less aggressive tires, mostly the ******** Cepek Fun Country II.

Of the tires you mentioned I do have some interest in the MTZ.

What size did you get for your Taco? Curious.

I am on 255/85/16s pretty happy also, I agree with James they seem to wear a bit fast but I am really happy with them off road.

I also had a set of 315s on the FJ. Great gripping tire.

James not sure I mentioned, I ended up swapping the front calipers and rotors so that I could fit my TRD wheels. Actually feels better braking after this change. I also was able to get home (Denver) from Moab, fully loaded on one tank of gas.

What size did you get for your Taco? Curious.

All my sets have been 32-11.50 R15, on both Tacomas. I don't run them til' they die, rather I'll swap them out before they get too low and put them on other project rigs, I've transplanted a set on my 80 Series (sold but still running them) and one of my employees rigs (FJ55 which recently sold up to Oregon and is still running them to my knowledge). They are great tires, they wear faster than others but knock on wood zero un-repairable failures. I'd really consider them on my FJ40 if I wasn't so in love with MTR's.

Ok, Ill bring this back.

Any updates to mileage and usage from current users of the bighorn? I have been contemplating a set for our 91 suburban. I was about to get the BGF KM2s but found the mileage is not so great. I had decided to default to the typical 315/75-16 for the full size when I came across the Bighorns. I can get a set of stock steel wheels 16x6.5 for $50 so right now I am on the fence.

I'm using the Bighorns again after a 2+ year hiatus, but only have about 1,000 miles on a new set, they're on my rarely used F350. For the old F350 platform I really like the Bighorns in 255/85R16. However, they are a pretty loud and fast wearing tire.

Not sure you would get much better (if not worse) wear out of a set of Bighorns compared to a set of KM2s, but that's just my guess.

I got some info from Scott brady in regards to the KM2s on the E7 rigs. granted they saw some hefty stuff but they also saw a lot of pavement. They were getting around 10,000 on them. I also have a local guy that just got done with his set of KM2s after 23,000 and his are all chewed up like a heavy rock crawler but all he does is light trails and hiking.

I am guessing the bighorns are probably no louder then then the good old mud kings or the old BFG MTs. they look like your run of the mill MT tread pattern from back in the day. I figure since I am get them real cheap. its worth a shot. at my rate right now 20,000 miles is like 4 years, if I can keep the Arizona sun off them.

Still rocking my 3rd? set of Bighorns on my '04 Tacoma, I had them on my previous Tacoma too. If this truck stays around I'll likely grab another set as I've been that happy with them. I would have to check my log but I think I'm getting around 15-20k on the tires and as I've mentioned before I usually sell them with at least 1/4-1/3 tread, enough that they are worth it as 'get-by' tires for a customer or friend and I recoup some of the cost of new tires. Knock on wood, zero flats or tire failures in the 4+ sets of Bighorns I've been using

Agreed. Your use is similar to mine, few miles per year on my rig that has the Bighorns mounted. Like Kurt, I've yet to have a flat with my Bighorns.

Wear is not long, though maybe not worse than a similar tread, and the value remains good. In the 255/85R16 size I can still buy 5 for about the price of 4 Toyo M/Ts, and overall and for my use I like the Bighorns more.

The only spot I am worried about for traction will be hard packed snow on the road. It doesn't happen often for us as we have to drive 2 hours north to get to that type of road conditions. I have been spoiled by the traction of the BFG ATs I have been running for the last 12 years on 3 different vehicles. When we do go out most of the trip is asphalt.

I contacted maxxis and they said with the 255/85-16 being a heavier load range its more of a work truck tire so the compound of the tire is more stiff and should last a longer in regards to mileage. But in the same email when I asked about more details on the tire, he just responded with a direct copy from the tire specs page.

I also asked them if they had load capacities in deflating increments. Nope.
