May be pulling the trigger on a 2010-2011 4Runner Trail Edition

For some time now I have wanted a new gen 4runner. I was debating between an FJ and a 4runner...was leaning toward an FJ but then saw a Trail edition and that was it. I am close to pulling the trigger on a Trail Edition:wings:. Either a 2010 or 2011. It will be silver and I am excited.

Fortunately, I have enough patience to wait for the right one and right price to float my way.

What do you guys think of the Trail Edition as opposed to an SR5? Is the only difference between the two the suspension (KSS is it called? and Locker? If you own a Trail Edition, why did you decide on that model?

Ive seen a few Trail Editions on here and they all look incredibly sexy.

Thanks for the Input!

That is exactly the 4 runner I want. Very envious.

Yes!!! Definitely get the Trail. You said it yourself in my build/adventure thread...don't compromise :victory:. We need more of our kind in this section. KDSS is awesome. Montypower's post is spot on.

I drove one a week ago, a 2011 @ Toyota of bend. Asking 34k w/ 20k miles. Not sure if that was a good deal or not. Thought it was pretty sweet , but to many bells and whistles. Then drove a 2013 fj w/3.5 lift and it was the fj hands down. Every truck should have a "Party Time" button. I didn't feel like haggling so I got in my duramax and went home. Already have two Toyotas there. The 4rnr would be a good rig but just felt like a suv. I have a 1980 pickup lifted locked,94 xcab ddriver & 03 duramax = highway boat towing mauler.

haha I was hoping you'd chime in. After seeing yours I really started looking for one.

I dont NEED one but my truck has 200k on it and I drive alot so I need something more reliable.

Thanks for all the comments everyone.

I prefer to go with the 4Runner instead of the FJ because the 4runner has more room and all around look like a more professional car which is something I had to take into consideration because I often meet clients or have them in my car with me.

Montypower- Thanks for the link, I just printed it!

Man, I love this 4runner. I'm coming out of a 2nd gen Tundra and the thing was just massive. It was great to haul stuff and the camping supplies that I could take were endless. That said, it was just too big for the trails that we have here. I have a 5yo and 3yo and by time I dropped them off at school, the interior of the truck was destroyed with crayons, coloring books and story books....not to mention the kids seats. I didn't really have anywhere to store that stuff when took customers out to lunch unexpectedly. With the 4Runner, I can throw all that stuff in the back and still maintain a clean, professional car. I had a 3rd Gen 4Runner prior to the Tundra. I was never real impressed the build quality of the Tundra. It was nice...nicer than the Z71 I had in college but not equivalent to the 3rd gen. This 5th gen reminds me of my 3rd gen quality. Everything's tight. Nice materials and overall just very clean. It's a nice enough vehicle to confidently take white collar company owners to lunch...but still get compliments from even the redest of rednecks that get in my 4runner. I was looking hard at the Lexus GX460 but determined it would be frowned upon in my industry. I don't regret my decision for a second.

Thats exactly what I am looking for. It would make for a great car to bring clients in but also very capable off road and overlanding. Its also big enough to throw in a few surfboards and a few friends for a weekend trip.

Now stop telling me how awesome it is. I already want one bad enough. Just still not 100% I want to actually go through with it...its VERY nice being debt free.

Again, thanks for the input.

At 86k on mine, having a ball. Mine is a trail w/o KDSS, which is fine considering the setup I run...

Do it, you won't regret it.

I see you are in Cali.

You can get a brand new 2013 trail right now with kdds and navi for $34k. Toyota is having a $2000 incentive right now on left over 4runner and this includes trails. One guy from the 4runner forums flew to Sacramento and drove his new trail home to San Diego. He paid $34k before taxes.

What you want to do is negotiate price and than ask for the $2k incentive ontop of your negotiated price. Lots of dealers are not aware of this incentive so you have to educated them. Also this incentive is regional.

So please don't pay more than $31k for a used one.

Jonesyy- Awesome looking rig! Once I get mine I will most likely do something similar. Most likely not Icon as I wont be able to afford it but something similar!

Chmura- Thanks for the input man I appreciate it! A little out of my price range but I am still going to look into it!

Murphybob-I have seen your thread numerous times and love the look of your trail. Good luck!

Right now I am going to wait a little longer...gonna study the hell out of them and think about it for a few more months to make sure its what I really want....In the mean time I will be drooling at the sight of all of yours!

I had a 2010 Trail with KDSS and recently bought a 2013 SR5 for the wifey.
I also have a 2005 Tundra (that I bought after I sold my TE).

Honestly, they are nice trucks. Very nice. IT was the inside storage that was killing me - I needed to go back to a truck with a shell in order to not destroy it. The KDSS is nice because it keeps the suspension nice and compliant while minimizing the unwanted sway. The only thing I can really ding it on is power. My 2005 frontier had a nice neck-snapping pull off the line, and the 4R just doesn't. When I drove a 2005 with the 4.7, I was reminded why I've always loved a v8. The throttle response on the 4R is more like it is on a wire, where half way down yeilds 1/3 of power, and so on...

On the wife's SR5, the brake dive is a bit annoying, but that can be mitigated pretty easily.

I hope that helps some - I wanted to chime in because I have had a couple~!

Thanks for the input Character zero.

Going on Monday to a dealership to test drive one and talk about the 2k incentive chmura mentioned above. After reading some reviews it seems that lots of people arent very happy with the interior and how its bare with not much luxury? Any input on that? I don't mind it but I may want to look for an SR5 with some luxury and maybe an E locker on it...but then i wont have the sweet look of the Trail. Hmmm. Cant wait to test drive both of them to see what I like!

Thanks for everyones input! I appreciate it!

One huge advantage the 4Runner has over the FJ is it's fenders won't explode if you mount a steel bumper on it.

I've had my 5th Gen TE for about 9 months now. I am working on a build here on Expo too. I looked at getting a used one too, but opted for a new one when I looked at the nominal difference in price new vs. used. 20-40K use for $4-5K difference. To me, it didn't make sense to buy used. The value will stay either way. I came from a fully prepped 100 Series, so expectations were pretty high. Any I haven't been disappointed yet. All the suspension and traction do-dads mentioned above work phenomenally. That is why I got the TE. The power has felt similar to the 100, but what I love is that it is getting about 60% better gas mileage. If comparing to the FJ, I would say there are a couple reasons for the 4Runner. Interior access is much improved, rear visability is much improved, it has the dual VVTi which I believe has more Hp & torque than the FJ (not sure if new FJ has that engine), and it does go over better on a business meeting in suits. I like both trucks, but I am happy I have the 5th gen.

Cheers,
