Thanks for posting this. Just what Sprinter owners needed to never feel content again. ;)

Okay, now that's a neat trick:

LOL! You are pretty close. I read somewhere they want around USD225k for it, which I think sounds fair considering it is almost all custom work.

Seriously?
:Wow1:

It´s maybe as I live in GER and seeing these rigs (4x2 of course) every day. I personally give a .../nothing about brand value- and as of that Mercedes has nothing superior to Ford Econoline.
If you make a car without any offroad capabilities from 4x4 to 6x6 you don´t gain much! 225t$ is way to much for such a rig! Check out T-Rex. I am personally not a big Fan of these but these are in fact WAYYY more capable in a way of expedition use.

That depends on your goals.

4(or 6) wheel drive is very helpful for a camper in far more things than just "off-roading".

Just being able to camp on a beach (and cross the sand dune to it) or down a muddy road can be enough to justify the need.

Most people probably won't be trying to cross crazy boulder fields or inclines in their camper.

Right, mostly overdosed for customers needs probably.
My concern is also that you increase tire costs by 50%. But first of all this is technically not the best choice if you're willing to spend more than 200k into an all wheel camper with 7 meters length.

Sprinters are great ON road as to their lightweight uni body design. Neither their 4x4 or this design is great.

Btw: reducing the weight/ square of the tire is better done by increasing tire diameter before width. As the diameter counts in square. A third axle helps also but in a dimension of these small ties 6x6 conversion dies not count out ( usage/ price).

But for the looks.... different kind if the story

Someone who can spend this kind of money on a vehicle, can probably easy afford a third set of tires :)
This might be not the best choice, but definitely an option for someone who prefers a Sprinter. What would you choose instead?

I actually don´t care much about the brand! It always need to fit inside a category. If the category is showcase - the Sprinter wins for sure.

If you need a rough vehicle that can go everywhere, you better don´t start with one who was made for cargoing on streets. Particular if the vehicle is focused on as less weight as possible to cargo the most possible.

IF you want something in the category around 3-6 tons with has a capable 4x4 and the possibility to carry a box this is what comes in my mind. I´ve seen some on the biggest european offroad fair: I think it was here http://www.derjackistweg.de/bad-kissingen-2013/ or http://www.derjackistweg.de/bad-kissingen-2014/ and also one in the sahara 2012. A great concept and the owner (60+ :)) told us that he has no issues with the vehicle at all, except the lifting of the box top (horizontal lift at all 4 corners with hydraulic cylinders)
anyway here´s what I mean:

200k example:

- Torsion free frame!
- Frame can carry up to 3.5 tons (not the just load of the hole vehicle)
- Wheelbase
- up to 8-times frame flex compared to competitor vehicles
