When you see this, you've got to wonder if bringing your kids out here is a smart thing to do:

Wil's fridge seemed to be working pretty well:

This must be what happens if you don't have a fridge:

Nice trip report.

Me and a buddy had a plan to explore the Pinacate biosphere reserve north of Rocky Point and we went last week, the 27 and 28 of January.

We left work and headed out about 7am Wednesday morning and made it down to the visitors center at about 1 after grabbing lunch at a taco stand in Sonoyta.

We were really looking forward to an adventure after reading several posts on here.

My Spanish is poor at best (where did 4 years of high school Spanish go?) but after talking to the guard and/or ranger, he told us the roads were CLOSED due to the rain. Even after several minutes of trying to convince him we had ample supplies of survival, trauma, food and rescue equipment including a 4x4 with one helluva winch, he still was not impressed and told us the reserve is closed, and to try back next week when the roads were cleared.

So we drove into Rocky Point, loaded the cooler and headed out and camped on the beach a few miles east (or south) of the Mayan Palace.

Stayed the night and left for home the next day.

Lesson learned:

Call ahead and see if the roads are clear and the reserve is open.

Still had a good trip. We literally planed this trip about two hours before we left.

Great pictures and a great way to break into Mexico!:wings:

I have been going to Rocky Point since 2004 ever since I found some pictures from kai38 on the net, which I got to meet just a couple of months ago.

Maybe I will go next week to get my favorite shrimp tacos!:victory:

Wil, Mark and THE Bobby,

Thank you for taking the time to take photos and write down you thoughts. Threads like these are the ones I turn to when I get bored or down. A bit out of my comfort zone? Yes but it sure looks worth it!

Looks like it was a great trip; great photos. I'm jealous I don't live closer.

Glad you had a good time and got to help Wen celebrate her birthday.

Wil, and crew, looks like a fun trip. I surely wish Mexico was so close to me. I'm also glad to see you werent "afraid" to take the kiddos as well! Even having gone over the border a couple times in the last few years and only having POSITIVE experiences, I still cant convince my wife that it is safe for us to go. In due time though!

I remember heading down to Puerto Peñasco with my parents & grandparents as early as about the age of 5, back when Sandy Beach had no hotels on it. That's awesome you guys took all the kids down there on this adventure -- it definitely brings back some memories. I've only been through the Pinacate once and would love to head back to explore it more. I was very impressed at how clean & well maintained it is. And congrats to Bobby for finally making it to Mexico!

The fish market is a great way to spend a day, we've eaten at the same restaurant many times watching the dolphins & looking for whales.
....
Thanks for the pictures, makes me want to start planning another Oct trip.

Ha! FlyingWen's aunt and uncle have a "beach house" at Playa Bonita. Well, it is more like a permanent trailer there. We were kinda hoping to bump into them while we were down there, but didn't go out of our way to see them.

If you haven't been there in 3 years, a lot has changed. The "dirt Market" is now paved, and the old dirt road is now closed, and hotels have seemed to have all doubled in size, revolving around the golf course. The RV side of Playa Bonita is butted right up to the property line of a high rise hotel, and their swimming pool. Man so many changes, but still the same Mexico.

Great pics and report guys! I have not been to Puerto Penasco in at least 5 years now. In high school and for a bit afterwards my family had a house on the beach at Las Olas Dos. We would spend just about every weekend down there. I know I went with my friends every other weekend for a year. Good times. The last time I was down there so much had changed. I am looking forward to getting down there again soon. Thanks for posting this up guys.
