might buy an 06' OR manual, new to X's

I've been searching for a 3rd gen montero, but cant seem to find one that hasn't been thrashed or not taken care of. Xterras came across my radar and ive been lurking here for a few days as well as newx forums. I came across a few things to check on before buying, but couldn't find a buyers guide.

The 06' X OR I'm looking at has 143k, but has had its timing gear replaced due to some whining gear wear issue that I've read on. The owner is still trying to get me the receipts for that work done. The truck has been serviced regularly at Nissan dealerships and this has been verified. It has a cold air intake, Cooper ATP's in stock OR size, and weathertech mats as plusses. All fluids have been regularly changed, but no mention of clutch or plugs/coils.

Besides typical buying checks, anything I should definitely look at specific to Xterra? I'm posting here because I believe this is a more concentrated pool of enthusiasts that know the limits of these rigs

Well, your an MT so no need to worry about SMOD. How about wheel bearings? I'm trying to think of things I had go on mine. I have an AT 06 OR with 122K.

I'd imagine that the rear leafs are fairly flat if they've not been replaced along with the shocks at all four corners

I love mine. At 143K you'll need to plan some ongoing maintenance money. And the steering and suspension are well used up. Oh and plan on 18mpg

Unfortunately, the vehicle was sold yesterday. It was 2hrs away and I couldn't get away till today to see it.

Good thing is...these are now on my list. Gotta find a good one now. I would like to find a sub 130k OR auto(my wife prefers)

Well, make sure to check for smod on the AT, wheel bearings, rear differential, TC, it'll need a suspension refresh and of course look for the timing chain whine.

Guess my last post didn't post for some reason.....

I found another OR with the timing gear preemptively serviced. Timing stuff was swapped out before whine started in. With this done(along with the fuel sending unit, non-auto), are miles in the upper 170k's ok for this motor? I haven't really heard of any high mile issues as long as they aren't burning oil or anything

Mine's at 167k and I wouldn't hesitate to drive it to South America today. The engines are more or less bulletproof.

If it's not an auto, there's nearly nothing to worry about.

That's just what I wanna hear!

Done deal, gonna go pick it up within a week. Now I'm at the mercy of plane ticket prices. Got kinda lucky and found one with a med.duty OME lift, 80% dutatracs, and timing gear sorted out.

Picked the rig up today. 6hr drive back.

To my surprise, he had already added the front weathertechs and did all the interior LED's. He had a nice spreadsheet showing when and what was done during his ownership along with receipts for the big ticket stuff. My only gripes are that the brake pedal has a lot of travel(gonna do the brake fluid soon) and the clutch engages very late. Its practically is completely off before catching?

Really, my only short term plans are to clean it more than it is now and fix some cosmetics. Long term will probably be sliders and some better protection.

One more gripe.....I'm not too into the wheels. Might have to paint them a graphite color. Just too bling for me. They're 16x8 mb motoring, but unsure of the model

I was thinking the same. Perhaps you can find a set of OR wheels somewhere? :)

They are pretty pitted too, but no real curb rash. I'm leaning more towards sanding them down, using some body filler where needed, then painting them a dark graphite

I've become a belieber in just one day of driving it. I'll be taking it to our local off road park soon to have some real fun!

I don't know if that's typical Nissan or not but my '02 Pathfinder is the same way. Doesn't engage until my foot is almost off of the pedal. Took a little getting used to but now I'm fine with it.
.
FWIW my Pathy only has 118k on it so my guess is that it's not a wear issue, the transmissions are just like that.
.
Congrats on the new truck! It looks like a nice one.
