Montero Build

Nice build!! I think eventually all of us Monty/Pajero owners will be into a genIII. What CB are you getting, and where are you putting it? My genII has a double DIN stack, so I put a cobra (almost) DIN sized CB right under my head unit. Works great!

Keep up the updates, we're enjoying them!

Thanks, I am excited about building it up. Hopefully more will get done than what I got finished with the Trooper. I got another Cobra 18WXST II. It is about the same size as a stereo head unit and it will fit perfectly in the lower DIN just above the ashtray.

I certainly hope not. The gen II trucks are the perfect balance of utility and comfort. I still miss my '94 LS.

Every time I see these great gen I and gen II builds, I want to explore getting one again. Possibly a '98 or '99.

You can get ARB lockers front and rear, sliders made right here in the states, OME suspension, and an ARB winch bumper. About all I haven't been able to find is a good aftermarket rear bumper replacement.

Oh, and raingutters too for a stout roof rack.

I guess the grass is always greener.

Regardless, I'm diggin' all the Montero work out there.

I agree. I don't believe the IFS/IRS setup is a good one for my wheeling needs (both adventure/expedition as well as rock crawling trails).

Jeep bumpers seem to fit nicely with adapters. That's what I have and I can take them off today and sell them to a Jeep owner and they'll fit his jeep fine.:Wow1:

For overlanding, I would disagree. Even before I added the ARB locker in the front, I was surprised how far you could go with decent tires and the rear LSD, even with lifting wheels both front and rear. Now with the locker up front and judicious use of the handbrake to increase rear traction (only when needed), I find it's quite formidable. Now, if ARB would finally come out with the locker for the 9.5" rear diff

For rock crawling, I would certainly agree. Wheel travel is certainly limited. But isn't wheel travel in the gen I and gen II trucks somewhat limited?

Hmm. I'll have to look into that. For the gen III, this might be a bit tricky given that the plastic bumper covers the lower portions of the sides as well. Maybe some careful trimming might allow one to utilize a bumper made for another vehicle without it looking too homemade.

Yeah, I was focusing on my rock crawling needs as the main reason the gen III isn't a good choice for me. :)

I can take more detailed pics of how I was able to use them on a Gen II including the adapters I had made if you want? Let me know.

Certainly; I'd be interested in photos and the exact model bumper you chose.

But you can post them up in my build thread (see signature) so we don't keep diverting from Aaron's build thread.

Thank you for the help!

I know, but i had the money in my pocket, the itch to get off road again, the desire for something unique, and in my shopping there were no good Trooper specimens within 100 miles of me. The Monty came up and I thought it was a great deal so I snatched it up.

Thank you, and let me tell you, so far with doing a lot of electrical wiring it has been a real "treat" so far. But it has all been fun. I have to get used to the computer relearning or quit disconnecting the battery. Yup, did a little electrical wiring last night. I'll post up some pics when I get home from work today.

Another update, small but needed:

Got my CB installed and wired up:

Cobra 18 WX ST II

How my center stack looks now:

More:

And the Radio Shack mag mount antenna tuned up easily. I have comms again :victory:

I chose the 18 WX ST II primarily for the head unit size, it makes for a clean install. I also like the built in speaker, makes it very clean looking, and the speaker puts out plenty of sound. I had this unit in my Trooper and I really liked it, so I got another one. Now I am looking for a RAM mount for my GPS. Anyone know whereI can get them?

dark side? ohhh....irs, i see.:sombrero: just kidding, calling you a traitor was already taken. hurry up and get that lift on so we can see what it looks like.

Aaron, how do you plan fabrication of the rock rails with the shape of the wheel wells. Just curious,

Robert, those silly little drop down "mud flaps" are just plastic. Easily taken care of with a sawzall, and the sliders will mount flush with the bottom. Look at the pics of Tony's sliders two pages back in this thread or look at these pics and you'll see what I mean.
