More proof that Jeep is the leader in 4x4 overland vehicles

Honu

lost on the mainland
We ended up with 4 helinox a while ago
Also kinda what you did we dumped self inflating pads for inflatable type and got better down bags did quite a bit of downsizing
Last trip up to about 6500 feet was nice felt the difference of shedding a ton of weight and bulk
Unloading loading still working on things but nicer not loading unloading all that weight :)

Chair mods :)
Took some golf balls 1/2 bit drilled holes and use as feet keeps em from sinking in
Also came up with a headrest mod that is awesome can actually fall asleep in em works so well

Intresting Question

I dont think so, I think it is about axles, brakes, ladder strength etc. It probably depends what Country You live in.

But You can take newer lighter stuff wit You

For instance I bought smaller and lighter stuff

To left new stuff, to the right the old stuff and multiply that with maybe 5 people

To the left

Expeed lite 5 Down, small sleepingbag, Helinox chair

One Helinix chair compared to a cheap and ordinary chair

It goes about 3 Helinox chairs on one small camping chair

Hi

I do sometimes visit 4x4 community forum in South Africa, and sometime participate in the Jeep and Suzuki forums.

I think this is the biggest 4x4 forum in South Africa and Jeep comes on second post place, that is pretty big

http://www.4x4community.co.za/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=134

And I noticed there where

231,484 Landrover posts

137,813 Jeep posts

81,656 Toyota posts

74,846 Mitsubishi posts

52,964 Suzuki posts

It does not say so much but maybe something? Anyway I find it strange that Toyota had less posts than Jeep. But maybe Toyota have more dedicated Toyota sites (forums) on other places on the internet.

Why do Landrover have so many posts? I do think it is because al the problem they have and people askes for help:):sombrero: Just kidding.

I do find it very intresting as a former Suzuki Jimny owner that Jimny are so popular in South Africa as "overlanding vehicle" We in Sweden had the Jimny from Year 1999 and they got it about 10 years later.

You se a Jimny is slightly smaller than a 2 door Wrangler JK.

They dont sell Jimny anymore in Sweden because it failed the Moose test and rooled over and it lacks ESP

Here is my vehicles

You do know that Scott Brady here on Expeditionportal drove a Suzuki Jimny across Europe in Asia.

.I never watch TV. The boob tube is not for me. I work full time, love the out doors, have 3 kids, take care of 3 web sites. My observations are of uploaded videos to Vimeo and YouTube. I guess people who own Jeeps around the world upload more videos to the internet.

"Jeep was king at SEMA also"

an American auto parts show showing American car parts, how amazing is that ............duh

Globally jeeps do not hit the mark in comparison to land cruisers or even Nissan Patrols.

They are either simply not available, available only in limited numbers, little support - spares.

Toyota market and sell to their customer base requirements by country and you have been deemed to want only luxury cars, so that's what their shipping.

Even here in the wilds of Scotland....I rarely see a jeep , obviously we are a little biased to LR in the UK

..here at work in the parking we have 1 RR- 2off RRsports, 3 off Disco's and 4 off freelanders..........does that mean we are globally the best 4x4xfar.......no

it just means they are popular based on price, servicing, spare parts and local support

Like jeep in the US

Maybe you aught to get out more and stop watching the world through American TV

I like jeeps. They're nice, but where I live in Houston every soccer mom has a built rubicon that she "trails" to the salon. After seeing that every where, there was no way I would buy one. I'm good with my tacoma.

Where I live (Silicon Valley) it is the exact opposite. Every other truck is a Toyota and an American 4x4 really stands out as unique. I think there is a little Harley Davidson factor with the Jeep. Its an American original. There is also the history of Jeep. WWII American liberator. After WWII Toyota just copied the Jeep as did Land Rover. So for some owning the real deal has meaning.

I would have no issue owning a Jeep. It was what I looked at first. But I like to be unique and not look like the sheep around me. So when I started seeing all the Jeeps around (and the price tag they created) I went with my Tacoma. I felt that 45000k+ was ridiculous for an Unlimited Rubicon.

All of that's been pretty well blown out of the water as well. The kiss idea is silly. There are thousands and hundreds of thousands of new vehicles with over 300000 miles. The idea that older is reliable is crazy.

Exactly. KISS is only good within reason, we don't want airlines to be flying DC3s do we?

Commercial haulers move millions of tons of cargo, all around the globe, from the sub-freezing arctic tundras of Alaska and Scandinavia, to the blazing desert of Australian road trains operate in. Most have advanced ECU and diesel emissions, in addition to all kinds of stability, ABS, traction control, and trailer sway control systems.

While I'm not yet a fan of post-07 diesels on light duty pickups, I would NOT hesitate a single bit to take a brand new Power Wagon overlanding, provided parts are reasonably obtained.

My point exactly. The Land Cruiser is 75000 and it is weak as hell..

Man, have you any idea? I'm no fan of the newer Cruisers myself, but weak is the most inappropriate word you could possibly come up with to describe them. No friggin' way. They're the most overbuilt, durable vehicle on the road in the US by far.

For the price of a new unlimited, I can get a bad *** Frontier Pro4x. In my 05 Nismo, I yanked plenty of jeeps out of snowdrifts, and you know, could haul more than 4 people in it. I looked it up, and my 99 Forester has a cargo capacity of 10 pounds less than an unlimited... ****** Jeep. Jeeps are a status symbol anymore. Just wait until they have independent suspension on those things! Hehehe

Hi

I posted this before but here is an direct link to what Outback travel Australia thinks about Wranglers and other vehicles. You can read about other vehicles in the buyers guide

"The Wrangler Unlimited has a light, half-tonne payload and is aimed principally at the urban dweller, who wants daily transport that can be transformed into a weekend and holiday ‘escape’ machine. "

Hi Omar,

Nice Jeep and setup BTW.

Just a question, how do you find the comfort of the smaller sleeping mattress?

We're on a down sizing mission, just like Honu's. Started with the Helinox chairs, now looking at our sleeping bags and our self inflating mattresses.
