Excerpt from olive-drab:

The M-1083 Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles (FMTV) 5 ton Medium Tactical Vehicle was produced in these variants:

M-1083 W/O WN (NSN 2320-01-354-3386)
M-1083 W/ WN (NSN 2320-01-360-1895)
M-1083A1 W/O WN (NSN 2320-01-447-3890)
M-1083A1 W/ WN (NSN 2320-01-447-3884)

The M-1083A1 variant, approved in 2000, features a more powerful diesel engine, a better transmission and brakes, added corrosion protection, computerized engine diagnostics, and beefier drive line engine/transmission/differential connection components. Other upgrades in the M-1083A1 include more durable seating material and cargo tarp, beefier door hinges, and reinforced sections that can be used as footholds to gain access to the cargo area.

Excerpt from Global Security:

The M1083 Standard Cargo Truck is designed to transport cargo and soldiers. The M1083 has a payload capacity of 10,000 pounds and to facilitate loading/unloading, the bed side rails are mounted on hinges. The cargo bed can be equipped with an optional bench seat kit for transport of soldiers. The bench seats are constructed of a non-wood material and attach to the cargo bed side rails. The seats can be folded down and stowed when not in use. Soldiers are assisted climbing in and out of the cargo bed area with the aid of a ladder stowed on the vehicle when not in use. A canvas and bows kit is provided to keep soldiers and cargo protected from the elements. The M1083 can be equipped with a self-recovery winch capable of fore/aft vehicle recovery operations. The winch has 280 feet of line capacity and 15,500 pounds bare drum line pull at 110% overload.

M1087 5 ton Expansible Van

Who knew? The Army has slide-outs! :)

I'd love to hear from a veteran who worked with these trucks if they were able to find a way to seal the slide-out to prevent dust/water/air intrusion into the box.

Aren't you one of those 'stop planning and go' types?

Yes.

Go sooner with less rather than later with more.

You've been home too long now...

Yes. My wife feels that way about me once in a while too. :)

I do appreciate you sacrificing your productivity to uncover previously-unknown sources.

You are very welcome. I am very glad to help the community in some small way. Wish I had some practical experience with these trucks so I could add some in-use reality to what's here.
