OK, so this one is not so Low-cost, but geez, there has to be a creative overlanding use for these remote-controlled spray systems. :)

As much fun as that'd be, its not road legal. Airport firetrucks are frequently too wide - like 135" wide here. IIRC, some of the big MAN fire trucks are similar in width, and I think the Action Mobil-built "Desert Challenger" is built on one.

That could indeed be the case.

I asked the broker if they were street legal and capable of being titled and licensed for the street.

He told me that they drive them to their facility and to the delivery location of the purchasers. I took him at his word.

Note, however, that those vehicle movements may have included escort vehicles or special "wide load" permits for those deliveries. I did not ask about that during our call.

As several experienced people have reminded us all in this thread, any of these vehicles, especially the specialty vehicles or ones from unusual manufacturers, should be researched carefully.

Very important thing to note, all these trucks listed are modified highway trucks, most have HD springs, they might be 4x4 6x6 etc, but their offroad performance is pretty poor, ride is horrendous. I talk from experience I spend nearly everyday offroad moving drilling rigs, US trucks are a compromise with a heavy leaning towards support heavy loads, Articulation - Ride Quality- Offroad Ability is way off the design chart, If you want to choose US then at the very least choose US Army trucks, even these are over shadow buy offroad performance of the European and Eastern Block Trucks. On the flip side you can easily buy parts. If your buying 4x4 6x6 etc then offroad ability has to be an issue right ?

My former, much missed, mighty Ukrainian Kraz 255b. FYI these and the great Ural 4320 6x6, can be purchased inc' US shipping import duties etc for < $30k if you plan on exploring Eastern Europe - Russia - Asia then parts are readily available + anyone can work on them.

I'm w/ you on that! Our choice was a M109A3. All manual tranny & steering (we will go w/ some form of power steering for one of our mods). we got to start w/ a 12'x8'x6'6" box, oak flooring, opening (screened) windows, and the off-road abilities of a tactical vehicle. All for a couple grand.
Now we have about 10K + or - into her w/ wheel & tire mods, extra 50 gal fuel tank, 14.5 gal propane tank and stove, 30 gal potable water under pressure, solar panel & electric system, and she looks like this

I have the "work truck" , and we travel like this

If I was going to have one for the other side of the world it would a Ural, Kraz, or a Maggie (I do like those older maggies).

Probably have to put 5 tons on it before it rode half deceit :)

That's the probs w/ trucks over 5 ton, you either have to really load them or do some suspension mods.

I saw an older DD powered AWD fire truck that would make a cool cab and chassis base for GAV AKA Global Adventure Vehicle.I get a pic if I see it again. It would fit neatly inside a shipping container with a hard side pop up camper on the back.

Gotta say, I like Low-Tech's approach to low cost convoying, just take a water buffalo and stay out as long as you like!

On ebay, saw a duce that had a chevy 5000 series (I think it was), the duce cab was taken of and replacrd with a 4 door cab then the duce hood was blended back in, has an open bed. Comfort of a big chevy, a/c and heat, quiet with the military benefits!

I started a thread on it in the 'for sale, ebay' section, but you are right, it probably belongs here, too!.
