Pretty good "interview" for a car magazine. A few nice camera angles underneath too. Thanks for posting.

With all the comparisons available these days and a mindset of getting caught up in "specs" (I do this with the worst of them!), I loved the comment "forget about your brain, listen to your heart" (this can apply to any personal choice regardless of the results)

My biggest complaint with the G is it's skyrocketing pricing each year or so. It wasn't too long ago the 2008 G55k was less expensive than the current model by the cost of a decent whole new car.

I enjoy his videos as well! Granted if I was buying new, I'd option for the range rover and buy a used w463. I just don't see the point of a new one "shrug" of course twin turbo v8 sure would be nice, but I'd option for the turbo diesel if they made one

Interesting video. Even though I drive a LR D1 if I could pick between these two I would want the G63 as well. Looked like a parked Bugatti Veyron at 13:46.

That Black and Yellow Veyron belonged to Persian designer Bijan (died a year or two ago), and is still parked outside his boutique on Rodeo in the same spot every day. Google it.

I googled it. Interesting story and pictures. Here's the Bijan Veyron on the left.

I really like in the video once he got to Beverly Hills to drive around a Range Rover and G-wagen was almost in every outside shot or drive by. its like they were planted to be in those spots for the show. :coffeedrink:

I loved this video! thanks for posting. I agree totally - listen to your heart. I for one, would never take any air suspension equipped vehicle more than a tow truck drive away from the dealer - I replace too many air struts on Ml and GL and E class vehicles every day. Others may argue, but give me steel springs any day.
Granted the G Wagen rides stiff, but that's part of the charm.
Also, mechanical lockers beat electronic hocus pocus any day in my book.:)

I found it interesting that he indicated the Range Rover does not have a diff lock. It should have at least the center differential lock and the rear active differential lock is listed as an option.

It just occurred to me, that tow truck, flat bed really, may be on air springs.... ;)

I think you are correct and the supercharged model may still be standard including rear differential lock.

Aside from outrageous pricing, which can also be debated a little, would anyone here really consider buying a new G class of either US build for overlanding?

I know several. No different then buying a $100,000 AEV or a $140,000 EarthRoamer XV-JP.

Of the two, I would want the Range Rover. If I could get a proper diesel G-Wagen like the PUR or commercial, then that would be my choice. A G63 doesn't quite connect with me.

I realize the G63 may seem a bit over the top, but the G550 is plenty power and the same otherwise, in fact easier to set up for real use. The new RR however really is too softened for me especially with all the things like tire size limitations. I looked at one yesterday and they are quite cool and comfortable though.

On $100k AEV, I don't think I'd spend that much on one or the Earthroamer. I do like the Unimog based vehicles but then the $ is up another few steps as well.

I know you aren't into the new LC 200 but maybe it's the sweet spot on an overall package. Affordable but nice enough, rugged and reliable still, right in between the limitations for modifications with G being highly open to mods and Land Rover LR4/RR being less modifiable.

On the rovers you have the air suspension to "worry" about or be in trouble if it were to fail in any one of the system segments. On the LC you have reliable steel springs but still have the hydraulic KDSS system. Worst case though the KDSS leaks out and you have simply softer sway bar control on the way home.

The G also has computers but how likely is it the engine or transmission will give out on any of the 3 makes. I am however looking at these as 10-20 year vehicles, not just what would be cool right now or for a few years while under warranty.
