mpg question...jeep LJ unlimited...

trip out to borrego springs = 90miles
gas consumed =1/4 tank(about 4.5 gallons)
=18ish mpg

=happy jeep owner

trip up to simi valley from san diego = 180miles
gas consumed =3/4 tank (about 14.25 gallons)
=12.5ish mpg

=unhappy jeep owner


i had a roof rack on during the simi trip (first trip with it on) which may explain the lower mpg, and have since removed it,

problem is, i just completed 60miles on a 1/4 tank yesterday (4.5gallons filled me up) = 13.5ish mpg...

what gives? i don't get it...i thought removing the roof rack would have given me better mileage, but it's stayed the same.

the 60 miles are all freeway miles (i live and work less than a 1/8 mile from the freeway)...6 miles to my exit, 6 miles back..mornings can be a bit stop and go, but lunch time and evenings are 65mph all the way...(oh, and i'm pretty fastidious about my tire psi)

skool me...maybe its that my truck is only doing short 6 mile trips to and from work? engine isn't all the way warm and therefore not as efficient?

I get 11-12 whether highway or town. I get 7 when I spend the tank offroad in 4LO. When I pulled the Chaser, I got 10.

I am running 35's with 4:88. Right at stock RPM (3050) at 75. The regear didn't help the MPG's, just the giddy-up!

i'll probably stick with 31's, but might get a trailer in the next 4 or 5 years (no place to store it in our complex, right now)

I'm on 33s and have widely different gas mileage. Hill climbs, stop and go, off-road all impact my mpg drastically. With city traffic i get about 12 mpg. Offroad even less. On the open road with cruise control at 65mph I can get up to 18mpg. Of course any head wind and I'm right back down to 13-15.

yeah, at the end of my post i started realising that i'm only going on short trips, often in traffic in the morning. i'm sure that impacts my mpg greatly.

as did my roof rack, which won't be a factor on longer trips now.

i think i probably averaged about 65-70mpg on my borrego trip, so your's and mine sound about right.

How are you figuring your MPG?

You can't estimate based on the gauges.

You need to do miles traveled divided by gas consumed.

So, for me, I did 348 miles on the tank, with 18 gallons at the fill up. I try to use the same station, same pump, with the same method of top offs each time, to keep everything consistent.

I got 19.33 mpg which is good for me.

I get a pretty consistent average in my 05 TJ. With the rack on I get 200 to 210 miles per 14 to 15 gallons. With out the rack I get about 220 to 225 per the same amount. I seem to get about the same towing, but that is usually highway, and the other mileage is a mix.

The 4.0s are good motors but they don't get great mileage especially with the aerodynamics of the brick like jeep. I am getting geared up to do another project this summer, its going to be an LJ. For me....its time to go diesel. AEV did a nice little development jeep with the liberty 2.8. It runs around on 37" tires and will pull 20mpg on the interstate at 75mph with the top down. The mileage only goes up as you slow down. Power is better than the 4.0.....but not as good as the Hemi. This is also an automatic 2.8CRD so you are going to loose a little MPG there too.

I have something pretty neat up my sleeve that hasn't been done yet
