FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DATE: JULY 5, 2011
Jersey City, NJ – The Muskoka Foundation has launched a photography contest in conjunction with local communities throughout North, Central and South America. The foundation's five-day, intensive, Youth Photography program teaches technical and artistic aspects of photography to disadvantaged youth who then embark on field trips to capture all aspects of their respective communities through photographs, for the creation of special calendars featuring youth-generated content. The photography program is then facilitated by a dedicated trainer in the community where the youth reside.
The youth participating in this contest are from The Muskoka Foundation's Partner Communities in Pincher Creek, Alberta and Victoria, British Colombia, Canada, in Chinle, Arizona, USA as well as Oaxaca, and Guanajuato, Mexico. Students will use digital cameras donated to their community organization during the implementation of the original photography program. The photography activities will begin this Summer and wrap up in Fall 2011.
“We want to teach young boys and girls from diverse backgrounds the value that can be found through photography as a creative outlet and perhaps a career,” said Co-Founder Alice Gugelev, Muskoka Foundation. “These talented youth have been able to capture a unique, powerful, 'insider' perspective that has amazed even gallery owners and magazine publishers."
The youth will be working side-by-side with volunteers from The Muskoka Foundation to capture, select, and submit their favorite images. Deploying a creative use of social media for this photo contest, all images submitted by the youth will be posted in the Muskoka Foundation’s Facebook page, where supporters will “Like” and comment on their favorite images. Those images with the highest volume of “Likes” and comments will be incorporated into the 2012 calendar. Sale of the calendars will begin in November, with 100% of net proceeds go back to the youth to support their education etc.
“We’re very excited to have our youth participating in this calendar project,” said Erendira Revilla, youth coordinator at the Oaxaca Centro de Esperanza Orphanage, partner of the Muskoka Foundation. “They had such an amazing experience during this spring’s photography program implementation and are ready to begin the next phase of their photography careers.”
The Muskoka Foundation's vision is to transform the adventure travel sector by including volunteering as a standard part of every traveler’s plans. Through their efforts/experiences these travelers will contribute substantial and sustainable "Net Positive Impacts" in the more than forty Muskoka Communities around the world. We seek to achieve our vision by inspiring and equipping adventure travelers, as well as empowering our local partner communities, which include orphanages, shelters, and native/First Nations centers.
