My Drummond Island adventure

Sorry to hear you did not have that great of a time on the island. Sounds like we were there around the same time. We did see lots of rain and a hard storm one night, but we did not seem to notice the skeeters being that bad, however the deer flies were thick but not biting.

The skeeters were so bad that in the time it took us to open the doors, get in and close them there were probably 30 skeeters in the truck. My headliner looks like a paintball target.

My 255 wouldnt show the tracks...So I just went by the map I bought at the visitors center. It had them all on it.

One of the holes I hit about midway on the TT trail had water up over the hood. I was riding the side though so it was only the passenger side. Thank God for a few of the sidetracks around the deeper/rutted holes. Tight...but better than the alternative!!

Im not feeling as dissapointed now...I think it was the rain...I despise camping in the rain.

I think, for the families sake, Im going to invest in a used pop-up this winter. With a few suspension and storage modifications I can have a pretty sweet off road camper. Might even be able to get the wife out then.

I am guessing this to be the hole.

Are you talking about a truck camper like I have or a pull behind. They both have their advantages and disadvantages.

Pull behind. A truck camper wouldnt be enough room for 3 to 4, comfortably.

Ive been doing some looking and Id like to stick to a 10' box. 12' if I have to. Throw the springs over the axle and add wheels and tires to match my truck.

We're pretty happy with this set-up, but don't try to drag it down anything more difficult than a two track forest road. Usually we find a good spot to base camp from, go explore and then move on the the next area.

Don't give up on Drummond. We liked it there and we thought the northern section was the nicest up around the Fossil Ledges.

looks like a fun trip! I loved that stuff when I was his age...I'm only 24 and still love it!

Check out Haggis' setup. He had a post earlier this summer about Drummond and the UP. He has a nice trailer and truck.

Thanks.

Yes...exactly. To be able to have a base camp and shoot of as time allows.

We may actually head back up before the years over.

let us know when you go.

It seems like fall is setting in quick. If it gets to cool, then it wont happen until next year.

Or possibly after we get our pop-up, maybe a winter trip would be in order. Ive been wanting to get to the lake shores during winter for sometime as well.

Seems like theres a fair bit of interest for a trip to the island.

MichiganWheelers.com has a plan for a December run. Check it out.

Trip

I would be in for a spring trip..Less bugs and a good challenge..Little cool at night, but good camp fire weather all and all.....Plus my 5 y/o boy and 8 y/o girl go everywhere with me as well....Would be a nice time for kids, and not so stressful traveling alone.
