My Drummond Island adventure

Drummond Island is one of my favorite spots. We love wheeling, camping and just being there. I think that your issue with the trip was the single vehicle. With the terrain on Drummond, you can get in trouble pretty quick and with no one to pull you out, it can get scary. We have done this a couple times, but with more built vehicles. The best time to go to the island is in the Fall or Spring before it gets warm enough for bugs. It also is the pretties times in the U.P. Definitly try it again and bring some more people and another vehicle.

I would be in for a spring trip..Less bugs and a good challenge..Little cool at night, but good camp fire weather all and all.....Plus my 5 y/o boy and 8 y/o girl go everywhere with me as well....Would be a nice time for kids, and not so stressful traveling alone.

I may be up for a spring trip. Might have to start stashing trip money away now.

Having other children around would be a definte plus.

I wasnt stressed about being alone. I just dont like real technical trails. Im not a "wheeler."

Maybe well have to plan on a spring trip. Seems theres plenty of interest.

Well when we were up there at the begining of May there was still a big chunk of ice out by the Fossil Shelves. A lot of the trails had some deep water on them too. I know I had a waterline more than halfway up my grille from our night run.

The wife and I talked about maybe a spring waterfall tour seeing how so mny of them were dried up when we did it in August a few years ago.

Hmmm...I'd definitely like to go. Maybe I can talk Kristian into it as well.

Maybe roll a little U.P. Overland flavor into things. :ylsmoke:

My primary interest in my trip was to site see. Mainly the shipwrecks. But also the ledges and the north and south ends of the island. So another trip is definetly in order.

Are there waterfalls on the island itself?

I'd definitely be game for a Spring weekend trip. I'm planning on putting together a spring version of the UPOverland trip, so hopefully they won't end up on the same weekend...

None that I know of. Most of them are western UP.

The rest of our time on Drummond amounted to alot of cussing, a pull out with the come-a-long and a damaged (albeit not so bad it effects performance) rear spring mount. I found myself on the one trail I was going out of my way to stay off of. The "tight twisties." I wouldnt recommend this trail to anyone running a realitively stock rig running 31" tires. I should have turned around when I got stuck, but didnt think it would get any worse....It took 4 hours to go roughly 10 or so miles. Most of that time was me stopping and investigating the depth of the water holes and looking for rocks below the surface of the water. Some of the holes were deep, and some of the rocks were large. It made for an interesting 4 hours. I dont have any pictures of the trail because my only goal at this point was to get off it. In one piece. And it was raining.

Can't believe I've scanned past this Thread until now. Op I'd like to hear your thoughts on your Hammock set up.
Its a bummer to read about your time on the Island there is some great sights out there to see. The maps of the trails (although getting better than when I started going to the Island) can leave you in the middle of misery. Water holes can go from hood covering to dry in a matter of weeks. You can drive a hard pack trail covered in leaves one trip and the next time its a impassable clay slip n slide. The same with the insects, sometimes they are not bother some, but we once walked out at the ledges and then the Black biting flies attacked our legs, it looked like we were wearing black Knee socks with blood leaking out of them.
The ledges, and the Maxton Plains is an easier on the vehicle trip thats worth seeing, you can sit out in the Plains and just watch the Wildlife reappear. They have a great museum on the Island too that has great info of the history of the place. I'm heading up there October 9th for the weekend, I'd be happy to show you around. :smiley_drive:

Sounds like a spring trip will be happening. Ill either have a pop-up by then, or a RTT. Still on the fence which way Im gonna go.

Anyone that interested in a spring trip... feel free to fire up a thread in the planned trips forum!

It far better than sleeping on the ground. Set-up can be a pain if the ground is hard or rocky. There are 10 tie outs for the tarp and each requires a stake to be pounded in.

The hammocks themselves are a cinch to tie up. I have (per hammock) 2 poly pro slings that go around the tree. From there a whoopie sling made of 1/8" Amsteel thats attached to a ring on the hammock gets clipped to the poly pro via a carabiner. The amsteel whoopie slings are new. Originally I had the tree slings terminate in a dead end that got ran though 2 rings on the hammock end like a cinch buckle.

They are big enough that if hung with enough sag, you can lie diagonally in them and lay darn near flat. Eagles Nest Outfitters DoubleNests. I also have bug nets for each. You also never need to worry about level ground. The truck is parked at a pretty good angle towards the camera. The hammocks always hang level.

Yes... It was a shame we boogied off the island so quick. But it was just one of those times where we were both done and wanted to go.

I didn't see any entry for a trip plan. I will start one up Tomorrow unless I hear otherwise that a trip Thread has already been started. I didn't see any yet, but want to make sure we only have 1.:coffee:
