Wow. Beautiful photos. I'm close to have my blog post finished, broken into 4 parts. Still need to clean up and delete some photos. I added the sizing app so I will try it soon jd

Finally got the four parts of my trip loaded to the blog. 2019 - Idaho_Montana

I must warn you there are a lot of photos. I deleted a lot but probably not enough.

Hope you enjoy, and that goes for all the loyal supporters of your posts.

Arjan.....breathtaking.....that's the perfect adjective to describe what I saw.....

ghostdancer.....there's a small outdoor retailer in town called Revy Outdoors owned by Steven Cross which you should visit. Very nice guy that I spent some time talking with. He sells outdoorsy style tee shirts designed by a local artist that I thought were so unique that I actually bought one (I'm a sticker guy.....rarely buy hats or tee shirts that advertise my travels). Retirement rocks.....enjoy.....

JD.....I tried and I tried but it seems as though I could only access Part 4 of your blog. There's one picture in there of Sarah that I swear could have been Yukon. Anyhow, I enjoyed what I saw.....always looking for new ideas (which you gave me).....thank you.....

October 12, 2019.....Day One of Year Three.....well, that anniversary went overlooked.....

I traveled through Banff, Alberta once before.....it was July, 2008.....long before I knew of Expedition Portal and long before I began posting about my travels in a truck camper. I had just left St. Ignatius, Montana where I had acquired Yukon.....she was a beautiful little 5 week old puppy. On that day her name was Montana. We were on a trip to Alaska and it wasn't until we reached the border of the Yukon Territory that I changed her name. I remember so vividly that day.....taking pictures of her sitting in front of the Welcome to Yukon sign and thinking.....she's more of a Yukon dog than a Montana dog.....and it so it was.....a life of travel. Back then we also did trips by bicycle.....I was on my Surly Long Haul Trucker bicycle and Yukon in her Burly dog trailer. She loved it. All she's ever wanted in life is to be with me and eat human food.....what a great dog she is.....

Banff, Alberta, with a population of nearly 8,000 residents, is surrounded by amazing snow covered mountain peaks.....

It's a well known touristy town.....and definitely on the high end side of things.....

Block after block of great little shops to browse.....

20191007_103713-1600x778.jpg

The dogs and I spent the afternoon walking the streets and later in the day the dogs napped while I visited a few of the shops that I had scoped out earlier in the day during our walks.....

There's a railroad yard in town so more trains.....

20191007_102244-1600x778.jpg

The Bow River flows along the western and southern borders of town.....great trails indeed for walking.....

These wood carved signs were certainly unique and the craftsmanship was amazing.....these pictures I post....they do no justice to the craftsmanship.....

20191007_135619-778x1600.jpg

A friend of mine and his son flew to Banff years ago to mountain bike. Banff is a big ski and mountain biking town. My friend crashed, punctured a lung, and returned home to the east coast by train after his stay in the hospital.....this sign brought back a memory.....

Marijuana is legal in Canada now.....

20191007_111434-778x1600.jpg

I hike a trail in every park.....and I visit a marijuana store wherever I go.....and yes, I still do not smoke.....

20191007_111514-1600x778.jpg

We left Banff that evening, drove east passing through Canmore.....Calgary was next.....

"Spirit Leaf" made me chuckle.
Something I've often wondered about but never asked was revealed in the post before last. I think it was way back when you were taking food to feed those along the border that the question entered my mind about what the dogs eat? Human food! Rotten pups! What a life!
Fairly recently, I've been encouraged to travel abroad. I don't even have a passport! There is still so much I want to see in the US, before I'd be interested in traveling further. These recent pics have me thinking maybe I can broaden my horizons to include Canada! I will now say "there is so much I want to see in North America" :)

Surly LHT... boy that's my dream bike!!! I've been "touring" (about a half dozen 10-14 days and 500-900 miles) on a steel frame bike I bought from a local manufacturer here in Austin, "Fairdale". I'm poor so it fit my budget, but I have come to like it quite well. Only qualm is that it needs about 2 or 3 more gears. Anyhow, I still need to send my pictures to get developed from my trip because I don't trust doing it myself for these. I'll post some when I get them back. I've just been busy climbing around here and getting back into the swing of things. I plan on doing Mt. Whitney over Christmas and I've signed up for my first marathon as apparently I'm a runner now that I've been using it as cardio work for climbing. Anyway, I'm rambling you just got me excited talking about your Surly... As always enjoy the pictures and commentary.

tgil.....there's no reason that I can think of not to include Canada, and Mexico as well.....wonderful people and beautiful landscapes.....

Sticky9.....My Surly LHT, and all my associated gear, are in my storage unit.....maybe one day I'll bike again. I refuse to sell it. I guess it's an example of never say never. I had to give up bike touring when I became a 2 dog man. Selling much of my rock & ice climbing gear was painful.....a kin to putting one foot in the grave (or nursing home).....you know ? I look forward to seeing your pictures. Thank you.....

Azken.....it's funny but one small aspect of travel is that you get to see the creativity of man. I see so many great signs.....who would have thought that.....

JD.....got it.....it must have been difficult to leave.....it always is for me.....thanks.....

The drive east to Calgary, as you descend from the mountains was nothing short of incredible......

20191007_161257-1600x778.jpg

I found myself at this point being a bit on the depressed side. I didn't want to leave.....I wanted to be driving north.....way north.....

20191007_160331-1600x778.jpg

At the same time I needed to be realistic.....it's late in the season and the question I was dealing with was....."was I really up for all the inconveniences that travel in the bitter cold encompasses ?".....

20191007_155216-1600x778.jpg

I'd have time while stalled in Calgary to think about it as this storm was forecasted to last a few days. I looked into the rearview mirror and could literally see the storm front overtake the mountain range. I pulled to the side of the road to take a picture and the winds from the northwest, which were a tailwind to me and were not felt in the rig, caused me to lose my footing.....they were extreme.....

20191007_165208-1600x778.jpg

With the mountains behind us and Calgary just ahead.....

20191007_173612-1600x778.jpg

I checked for a spot on ioverlander and decided to weather the storm in a casino parking lot.....

20191007_195527-1600x778.jpg

I checked in with security and prepared to hunker down.....free wifi, and a possible buffet was on the mind.....

Now it's kind of funny that anytime I overnight at a casino I'm always thinking that I'll hit the buffet.....it seems that every casino has a buffet. Unfortunately the other thing that every casino seems to have are patrons that sit around all day and night gambling and sucking on cigarettes. Gambling is fine by me but the cigarettes are always a no go for me so I did not gorge myself at the buffet and we just hunkered down in the camper and we wasted away.....

20191008_121922-1600x778.jpg

The bitter cold moved in with the high winds.....the snow followed right behind.....

20191008_074202-778x1600.jpg

I don't know how much snow fell in the mountains.....I'd guess maybe 10 centimeters (4 inches) fell in Calgary, and the lowest temperature I saw was minus fourteen Celsius (6 degrees Fahrenheit). Honestly it sucked in that camper and it sucked outside the camper as well.....

20191008_130537-1600x778.jpg

Now I probably own some of the best winter gear that money can buy but unfortunately most of it is boxed up and sits in a storage unit in Montana. I picked up a winter coat from Walmart for $29.....it did not do well. I wasn't prepared to go north at this time of year and so it was that I made the only really reasonable decision that I could make and when the storm finally passed we drove south.....

We spent a night at the Walmart in Lethbridge, Alberta and the following day we were right back on the road looking for 70 degrees.....

20191010_104108-1600x778.jpg

Trying to keep Tanner entertained for a few days in a truck camper was nearly impossible. Of course we went outside in that bitter cold and he walked while on leash but he didn't get near the exercise that is required of a dog with his level of energy.....

20191010_111423-1600x778.jpg

With the clearing skies and slowly rising temperatures, we stopped at these recently harvested fields which were Tanner's utopia and here it was that he nearly exploded with glee.....

Love the flapping ears. Yes, it was very hard to leave. Montana is like a second home. Next trip will cover Missoula, Flathead Lake, Kalispell, up to Glacier and then onto Canada to BC and Alberta. Thanks for viewing the blog, too many photos. That is the hard part. jd

I laughed out loud at Yukon all snuggled up in the first pic, then again at Tanner doing his best impersonation of a bounding mule deer in the last! All that white is beautiful, as seen from the comfort of my desk at work. I can see how it might not seem so wearing a $29 coat from Walmart!

After all my travels this summer, the Canadian Rockies are the most beautiful I have seen. Safe travels Jerry. Love all the pics.

Jerry, the canyon in the picture is the Clark's Fork Canyon on the Clark's Fork of the Yellowstone River, along the Chief Joseph Hwy. (Hwy. 296).

From Sheridan we took I-90 to Randchester, Wy and picked up Scenic Hwy. 14. We had planned on taking 14 Alternate at the split across the Bighorn National Recreation area and up Hwy. 37 to the Canyon Overlook for pictures, but realized we would run out of daylight so we stayed on regular 14, up the switchbacks, with great views of the Bighorn Mountains, over Granite Pass to Cody, WY, and Hwy. 120 West to the Chief Joseph. We stopped at the scenic overlook for the photo. We camped at Hunter Peak and connected with the Beartooth Hwy. into Cooke City and through Yellowstone. I think you would enjoy this drive. jd
