My Journey

halseyt.....the dogs are pretty much loving life right now and you will see why in today's posts (I think).....

Ace.....thanks.....it feels so good to be out and about.....thinking alot these days about camping & exploring the mountain summits and in the forests as well.....wishing you a wonderful, safe trip.....

mekcanix.....thanks.....on the mend and preparing for round two.....

We certainly love a day spent in the National Forests, yet we are so fortunate to have nearly one thousand acres of land in our backyard where we can explore in the adjacent fields, the thin strips of woodland, and the canals that run within.....every morning starts with setting out the sprinklers.....it's always dry in July in southwest Montana.....

20230731_071153_copy_1200x560.jpg

The beauty of the dry weather is that it's time for the ranchers to make the first summer cut of the fields adjacent to the cabin property.....

20230721_155846_copy_1600x747.jpg

Once the fields are cut, and the hay is gathered, and stockpiled.....

Screenshot_20230731_131821_Gallery_copy_1600x746.jpg20230731_080559_copy_1200x560.jpg

.....we can once again access those lands.....

Screenshot_20230731_131748_Gallery_copy_1600x746.jpg

We walk here no less than three times per day.....more often than not, it's typically at least six times.....we absolutely love it here.....literally.....we are the only ones here.....

We walk by the big old Cottonwood tree that seems to struggle for it's life as it grows along the banks of the canal.....where the Bald Eagles once perched.....earlier this year.....always hoping for the return of those incredible Bald Eagles.....it's been too long.....

I doubt a walk goes by without spotting at least a single hawk.....or maybe two.....

20230731_082312_copy_1200x2570.jpg

They seem to spend hours perched in those high places.....

20230731_113116_copy_1200x560.jpg

.....waiting to make a kill.....

20230731_083746_copy_1200x2570.jpg

The thin woodlands that hide the canal within are filled with songbirds and nests can be found throughout.....

20230731_083036_copy_1200x2570.jpg

The ranchers keep the canal cleared of dead wood.....the piles of branches make ideal hiding spots for the wild animals.....

20230731_114437_copy_1200x560.jpg

20230731_114441_copy_1200x2570.jpg

We criss-cross the fields.....every step is carefully taken as the gophers or prairie dogs or whatever those damn things are called.....dig ankle breaking holes damn near everywhere.....

20230731_082951_copy_1200x560.jpg

One of my favorite spots is along the canals' banks under the shade of a stand of Quaking Aspens.....the July days in southwest Montana are quite hot right now.....so I often languish in that shade of those amazing Quaking Aspens.....maybe for a bit too long.....maybe not.....

20230731_081602_copy_1200x2570.jpg

.....and while I cool myself in the shade, the dogs cool themselves off in the canal.....

20230731_114124_copy_1200x2570.jpg

I've been thinking lately about getting in that canal to cool off with my best friends.....absolutely I would do it if I still lived in the truck camper.....somehow life is different when you live in a house.....

20230731_114116_copy_1200x2570.jpg

So for now I'll be content with the various trees along the canal that provide me my shade.....

20230731_081607_copy_1200x560.jpg

20230731_081643_copy_1200x560.jpg

.....that could easily change tomorrow.....

20230731_081339_copy_1200x2570.jpg

20230731_081311_copy_1200x2570.jpg

.....cause the water that flows through that canal looks quite inviting.....

20230731_081707_copy_1200x2570.jpg

The wildflowers are in full bloom.....I love them all.....

20230731_112247_copy_1200x2570.jpg

......as I do dogs.....I love them too.....

Because most here like dog pics, I'll post a few from our flatlander's trip to Colorado.
First is Scout, she's an ol' pro at posing for pics these days!
Second is the girlfriend's little princess, Molly, and Scout. Molly is just starting to travel. She's been a bit sheltered, when it comes to travel. She's settling into it nicely though!
Third is Layla & Scout. Layla is Scout's cousin that lives in Colorado. She is the most INTENSE dog I've ever been around. She's hiked some 14'ers, goes along on mountain bike rides and will find a tennis ball, if no one brought one along!

She even looks tense in the picture.

ITTOG.....thanks.....I'm so fortunate to have this place.....the timing couldn't have been better. I never could have survived 2023 living in a truck camper.....

tgil.....Scout is an incredibly beautiful Golden.....just unreal.....lucky you. So do me (us) a favor and post a trip report here with lots of pictures. XP is dying a slow death and there's rarely any trip reports anymore (it's about all I like about this site). I had hip replacement surgery on Thursday so I'm back to spending way too much of my life sitting in a dog chair doing the recovery thing. I'm certain everyone would love to read your trip report (even if it sucks !).....

Nothing much new at the cabin.....Tanner finally figured out that all he needed to do to see the neighbors was to simply jump up onto the end table.....yes, we live in a cabin with few rules.....

20230814_153007_copy_1600x747.jpg

Trapper stunk so bad from all those days swimming in the canal. I ended up taking both dogs to the vet.....long story.....$1,100 vet bill.....so Trapper got a haircut performed by me. Yes, it ain't real professional.....she smells so good now.....

And Bridger.....well, she's just happy that the truck has good a/c.....

That's about all we got.....

Sorry to hear of your hip surgery. Are you going to need the other one replaced as well? I hope it heels quickly. Luckily it usually does. I know you are like me in terms of being active so it shouldn't take you long, just have to wait for the doctor to release you along the various stages. Good luck.

You will obviously need to provide the details on that vet bill. Until then I will assume one or both dogs got an infection of some sort.

tgil,
I agree with Jerry, please post a detailed trip report.

PNWY & Arjan.....thanks guys.....dogs, dogs, dogs.....we love them.....

ITTOG.....don't be sorry for me.....I'm lucky to be alive. My other hip is just fine & thank goodness for that, as I'm ready to move on. My surgery was "textbook" per the PA. It only took them 45 minutes to replace the hip bone. I only took pain medication the day of surgery, and I only required the assistance of a walker for 2 days, and now 5 days later I'm off all medications, although I temporarily walk with a limp, and I do use a walking stick, again temporary.

Yes, Tanner got a skin infection much like he did last year when we were camped at Lake Mead National Recreation Area. They had to shave his entire belly which revealed lots of these small infections so he got antibiotics. Trapper grew a mold on her skin since she was constantly wet and with her unusually long fur, it really didn't dry out. I had to purchase medicated shampoo for her, bathe her every other day, and give her that beautiful haircut. They both got these sharp plant things embedded in their ears. They both had to be sedated to remove those sharp plant things. And lastly, they all three got fleas from sticking their heads into the gopher holes. That had to be treated and I had to purchase meds for that. Then I had to bomb my house and truck, and I just threw away all my bedding.....that's a really long story but you asked for it ITTOG. I'm lucky that I've had the same vet for over a decade.....I was thinking she was gonna call Animal Control on me.....unfit dog owner.....

The pic below is my new best friend.....no, not the dog with the Rod Stewart haircut.....the walking stick. I found that stick some years ago when I was briefly (very briefly I might add) a volunteer campground host at Glacier National Park. I picked it up, never thought I'd actually use it (I'm not a walking stick kind of guy), yet here I am relying on it for every step I take.....I can't wait to dump my new best friend.....

Here in Oregon, we have something called "Cheat Grass" . Its pointed like an : A: and it plays havoc on critters, always has. From my Livestock to my dog. When its the season here, I have to check her daily as it will go through all layers of fur, and imbed into the skin. Then, they can get them stuck in their gums against teeth when they try to remove them.

With the horses, sheep, and cows they would cause abscess. It looks a lot like bearded barley and is very invasive. Nasty thing for sure, in a lot of ways its worse than puncture vine/goat heads.

Im glad to hear they are ok now.

Sounds like the four of you have had an eventful month. Glad to hear all is on the mend. My hip surgery was different but your recovery sounds a lot like mine one I completed four weeks of crutches. I think it took me about four weeks to walk without a limp. Given that, I believe you will be back on the mountain very soon.

ITTOG.....I'm curious, what were your surgeries like ? I'd like to know more. Did you use a walker ? Why cruthches as opposed to a cane / walking stick ? The narcotics that they gave me made me deathly ill. I puked my guys out. I stopped them Day One. The worse thing now is the compression socks that I'm wearing. I had no idea they were coming. I absolutely hate them.....with a passion. Anyhow, tell me more about your experience(s) if you would please.
