In an earlier post I spoke about the stories within the story.....this is some of what I was referring to.....
The desert sand dunes are amazing note takers and when you spend a lot of time wandering in the dunes many things are revealed.....
The tracks of the animals that pass through the desert are just one of many.....
It's not only the animals that leave their tracks in the sand. Here near the border people also pass through the dunes. I came across this shoe in the sands.....maybe not more than a half mile north of the border wall. The toe of the shoe pointed north to the U.S. ..... and I'm guessing to a better life. I wondered did this person make it to America.....did their life change forever.....
Here under a large desert plant I found several backpacks.....each contained a change of clothes, a baseball cap, a toothbrush and a few personal items.....again I wondered did these people make it to a better, safer place.....America.....
I found maybe a half dozen of these homemade pads strewn about the dunes. In my conversation with the federal agent he told me about these and how migrants used these makeshift pads and carried up to 60 pounds of drugs across the border in exchange for a discount to their smugglers fees.....
The desert is also filled with lots of trash.....my guess is that most of it originates from the interstate. The desert bushes act like giant lungs and snag the majority of the trash into their limbs. I lost count on the number of bags that I filled.....and it really doesn't matter anyhow.....
I came across this dead scorpion.....it's the first I've seen in the desert.....
And then there's the skull of a desert lizard impaled on the sharp thorn of a desert bush. My son told me about a bird that impales its catch on thorns and wire fences.....it's called a Shirke. I Googled it and indeed it does.....
All of these pictures tell a story.....you see there's just so much going on out here in the desert. It's not difficult to understand why so many people become infatuated with the desert.....it's amazing.....
