So over a year ago a buddy mentioned he had an old 416 in his yard. I had been looking for one for sometime, so he simply blessed us with it. Well I went to recover it in my m101a3 and the whole thing was in pieces, hardware in milk jugs, etc. Over the last year we've sand blasted, welded, painted and drilled our life away. We had a lid fabricated up from aluminum, fenders to fit matching tires off our tow vehicle also. Just wanted one type of spare rim and tire for both truck and trailer. Swapped axles and had it match the trucks rear width and got parking breaks over electrical. That way when towing or backing no issues like surge brakes and still maintain handle/cable operated brakes when parked or deployed.
My wife even helps on it which is cool and were both excited to hit the trails with it. These little suckers are lots of work but the perfect size for our cucv k5 diesel. Figure we might upgrade to a 4runner one day which also runs 6 on 5.5 so that's perfect.
The plan is to throw a rtt on top, solar panels, tongue box, battery bank, line x the tub, and organize it. Fill it with everything needed to go off grid for overloading whenever we want to or need to. Also a life boat of sorts for us in case of forest fire. We will have a little bit of everything with us if we have to hitch up and leave the house in an emergency. A friend almost lost his house a few months ago in ca after a serious fire. Only two or three houses survived on the whole mountain. That has lit a fire under my *** if you will, also been creating much more defensible space and clearing fire ladders off the trees.
