My New (and improved!) Zodi Extreme Camp Shower (lots of pics)

Well, several weeks ago, I was reading a thread on hot water showers and someone posted a link to a good deal on the Zodi extreme showers from Costco. I had already aquired the items needed for an onboard hot shower system using a 12 volt pump, 16 gallon water tank for under the bed where the spare used to be, and a nice homemade heat exchanger under the hood. I had been putting off installing that system because of the complexity of it, and the added weight/bulk of the water tank, that would only be used once a month at best. I figured, for the price of the Zodi, I could try it out and it would not be a huge loss if it didnt work. I was very skeptical of the small capacity of the tank, but after "testing" it today, It delivered piping hot water for well over 3 minutes....more than enough for a good shower. It took about 18 minutes for the water (2.8 gallons) to get up to about 105 degrees, which is acceptable in my opinion.

The tank itself is very nicely built, simple and the small parts (orings, etc.) should be easy to replace if need be.

The burner/stand unit impressed me quite a bit to be a "freebie" with the shower. It will easily double as a cook stove, and will hold a fair amount of weight with ease.

The burner also takes the common size small propane bottles, that every other camping gear I have takes (grills, lanterns, heaters, etc) so that is convenient.

I was also concerned about the temperature "strip" on the outside of the tank, but it seems to work flawlessly, and is sufficient for this set-up.

The padded carrying bag holds everything with ease, and it well made.

The shower head.... well, the shower head sucks, as many have said. That leads me to the next few hours of work I did this afternoon.

This is WAY over done, but every now and then I like to try to do things the right way/cool way.

This is my new "shower head". My Wife has been using one just like this in her garden for over a year now, and it has held up extremely wellout in the sun. The head itself has multiple positions to allow different types of spray patterns, including a "soaker", "shower", "mist", "flat", and "jet" setting. I managed to plug the "Jet" setting which is next to the "shower" setting. This allows the shower head to be turned off just by rotating the dial a few degrees, and its air/water tight. I also intend to utilize the stock ball valve that came on the shower system, but this is another option to turn the water flow off.

I cut the end off (and machined it square) of the garden hose attachment. This normally had a female garden hose threaded section on it, but I needed a simple barb fitting to use the stock hose from the shower system. The tube is anodized aluminum.

DSCN0009.jpg

Starting to make the barb fitting that will hook to the stock shower hose. I have a small business that I run from my basement, which includes making radom small parts on my little lathe and mill. Its nice to have this equipment for small projects! Everything you see is made from Delrin, its light, easy to machine, and very strong.

DSCN0010.jpg

Barb is finished. I made it to have a press fit taper on the end that goes into the tube, this way it will be water/air tight up to quite a few PSi.

Pressed into the end of the tube.

I want to utilize the Zodi rod holder that is mounted on the side of the tank, and needed a way to mount my new shower head for hands free operation. Also, my wife is 5 foot nothing, and I am 6'1", so I wanted to have the height adjustable. This is where it starts getting to be a little overkill, but its cool none the less.

Here you can get the idea of what I am doing, I will finish everything tommorow when I get the actual pole finished that mounts to the side fo the tank and holds up the shower head.

part 2

After this point, I was ready to call it good. I walked up stairs to show it to my wife and explain how it will work, and the first thing she says is, where do I put my soap and poofy washy thingy?......Seriously? Ok, back down stairs I went.

Introducing the first (I think) fully machined billet delrin soap dish/poofy washy thingy holder. (you can also see the finger screw that tightens the shower head at whatever height you wish. It has about 14 inches of vertical travel.)

I will get this finished up tommorow, and post the final pictures of the rod assembly, and the shower in use. I am trying to figure out a way of adding a small compressor to maintain pressure in the tank so it doesnt have to be pumped 6 different cycles during the shower. Maybe I will, maybe I wont, but it would be nice.

Like I said, 90% of this could have been done with zip ties and hose clamps, but this is way cooler in my opinion. :D ~James

:iagree:

Great notes on the Zodi. Overall it's a smart set up and a good buy. I hope the Mrs. likes it too.

I see no problem going overboard if you have the time, tools and skills to pull it off and make it even better. My hats off to you -

I can see why you have a "small business in the basement making small parts" ;) . Nice design, fabbing and execution!

This question will probably get answered tomorrow when you post up the rest of your thread...but where will the shower assembly mount?

Nice job! Gotta have a soap dish/poofy washy thing holder, that's fer sure!
Thanks for posting. Looking forward to seeing it all set up.

I'm always freaking out... "Where's my thing?" This explains it!

Seriously, very impressive. Add the nice shop & skills and you now have at least 3 things I'm jealous of. Nice work.

Thanks!

Thanks a ton for the compliments guys, now I dont feel quite as crazy spending the 5 hours on machine work... :D

Got her all finished up this afternoon. Here are some pics/info, let me know what you think!

Here you can see the upper portion of the attachment rod. I had to turn down the ends in the lathe so it was nice and straight/smooth in its fit. I wanted to make the attachment rod in two section instead of one long. It will be much easier to store/carry like this. The entire shower head, hose, and attachment rods fit easily in my shower enclosure bag.

This is how I attach the upper and lower rods, in hindsight, I would have made this peice of Delrin a press/permanent fit on the lower rod, since I will most likely leave it on that rod when not in use. I can still do that if I make a new lower rod, or connection peice.

DSCN0024.jpg

This is the bottom end of the lower rod, it is turned down to fit into the existing hole thats on the side of my Zodi tank.

OH MY!! (I had a brainstorm last night.... while in the shower of all places)

DSCN0026.jpg

(yep, thats a valve stem :) )

DSCN0033.jpg

Hooked to my onboard air system and regulated to 20psi, now I have a fully pressurized tank for the entire shower. Of course, the hand pump still works as it normally does, so if I am not near an air source, I can still get clean :victory:

Here is the shower system in "Me" mode.

DSCN0027.jpg

And here it is in "Wife" mode.

DSCN0028.jpg

This is how the shower support rod attaches to the side of the Zodi tank. I havent spent much research time on their products, but I assume this is what these add on bits is for? Perhaps they have their own version of the shower rod.

DSCN0032.jpg

And finally, the shower system in operation! With the onboard air system hooked up and regulated to 20psi, it comes out nice and steady, but doesnt empty the tank too fast. I was messing around with the different spray patterns, and with it on "jet" and the psi bumped up, its like a mini pressure washer. :ar15: (where is that pressure washer smiley when you need it?)

I was going to take a nice picture with a couple poofy washy thingy's hangin off the hooks, and a new bar of soap, but my German neighbors were already staring at me in a rather quizical way. They already think I am insane because of the "monstrosity" (compared to their vehicles, it kind of is) of a truck I drive.

Anyway, mission accomplished for now! I will use it a few times and see what, if anything, needs to be changed.

Dang! That is nice! :clapsmile

And I thought it was good just to have a hot shower at camp! Now I gotta go but a sprayer head and a few other little pieces and, oh dear, where'd my wallet go?

Very well thought out and executed design, I like it.
Just imagine what the neighbors would have thought if they looked out to see you showering in the back yard! :shakin:

Have you had a chance to test it out a few times? How is it holding up?

Wow...that's a great mod.
Simple (for you) design and execution!
Too cool!
Did you include an on/off valve in there somewhere?
