My nightmare with Callen Campers

Hi folks, new guy here, I have a 92 Dodge 4x4 with a Cummins and a 5-speed, I am trying to build it up as an expedition camper.

I ordered a shell from Callen Campers, and it's been a nightmare.

I sent Callen Campers (San Diego) detailed plans for a camper shell, along with a $2400 deposit, from my home in Utah, back in Jan 07.

The check was cashed before Jan 15 2007, followed up by a phone call from the fabricator. He claimed a build time of 8-12 weeks. This is the only phone call I have ever received from Callen.

When I called in April to hopefully schedule the delivery/installation of the shell, I was told there were design questions, and the shell hadn't been started yet.

So I made a special trip to Callen on Easter, April 8 2007, to clear up any questions, which we did, and was told 12 weeks for the build time.

When I called in September to arrange pickup (I'm in SoCal twice a year, Spring and Fall) I was told it wasn't complete, so we agreed to get it done by the Spring.

When I called in the Spring, on April 19 2008, to arrange pickup, I was told my shell was mostly done, but my desired pickup date may be a problem due to the impending birth of Scotts child, and we needed to schedule around that, I had some flexibility in my schedule, so that wasn't a problem.

As my desired pickup date drew near, I called multiple times over the better part of a week to arrange a pickup date, but the phones were off at the Callen shop, and my time in Ca. ran out, so I returned to Utah.

I found myself in SoCal in June 08, so I called on the 12th or 13th to arrange pickup, and I was informed my shell had been sold to someone "in a hurry". I told Scott Callen at that moment that I wanted out, to cancel my order, and refund my money.

After a month of waiting for the refund, I sent them a letter formally asking for a refund, and a return of the parts I also sent them, 2 Blitz Can carrier racks and a piece of pipe. That was 3 weeks ago.

After 18 months Callen has failed to build my shell, and refuses to refund my deposit.

I can't believe Callen has been in business this long treating customers like this, it seems they are blatantly trying to rip me off, and stall me, since the statute of limitations to sue them in small claims runs out in Jan 09.

I don't want to sue these clowns, I just want my frigging money back so I can order a different shell and get on with my life.

Do business with Callen at your own risk, I wouldn't advise it unless you are so close to them you can stop buy and hassle them in person on a weekly basis, but as far as trying to do long distance business with these slackers, don't do it.

I wish I had gone with an A.R.E. DCU 90-degree sidewall/radius front shell (The Mec, paging The Mec, please pick up the white courtesy phone), and I will, once I get my funds back from Callen.

Well, Welcome to Expo! That is one bum deal. Over a year later and they sold YOUR camper to someone else when you already payed a huge deposit on something you had them make for you.

I hating suing and taking people to court, but in this case it might be justified. That is way too much money for them to treat you like this. Maybe threatening court will at least get you your refund

heya donnyh, that is really bad news! I just modified my sig and took Callen off. I haven't pulled the trigger on A.R.E. yet because I've been thinking that I want a (insert feature here) instead. Currently that feature is a small cabover for lightweight gear like duffel bags/sleeping bags etc. I just found a company similar to Callen that is worthy of investigation. (Hopefully not similar in the customer service area). Here's the link to Bel-Air. And here's a picture of the style I'm thinking about. Looks like a Callen doesn't it. Probably not as strong but I'm sure it's much lighter.

I need to talk w/ them about construction, 4WD strength etc. I'll let you know.

Thanks for the welcome, folks, this situation does suck, instead of this b.s. I should be here asking questions about Engels, Espars, lighting and homemade bumpers, but my expedition camper can't even get off the ground without the shell.

My truck is pretty dialed in for my needs, rebuilt Dana's, rebuilt NP205 and 5-speed, the stock Cummins is plenty of motor, I run Bridgestone Tevos and have a fresh set on there, the lift kit was done right with re-arced springs instead of blocks, it does really nice in the mild off roading I ask it to do (for a long wheelbase 7000 pound truck, that is).

Now if I just had a damn shell on there. I did have a crappy topper on there, but I ripped it off last year to make room for the Callen, so without a topper I've been extremely limited in my camping trips, this is the second summer without a major camping trip for me, that is the truly painful part of all this.

I was hoping, but it hasn't worked yet.

Attempting pics of my truck here, this is Upper Firehole, Flaming Gorge, Wyoming:

If you ever make it to Flaming Gorge, try the crawfish:

There's a reason they're called the HIGH Uintas:

There's theMec, hi, howya doin, I've read your posts on your shell needs, we have some similar thoughts, and you're the only reference on the net I have found talking about the 90degree ARE shells, so I have you to thank for that.

It took me months to draw up the final plans for my Callen design, there's always another (inserted feature) to be considered. I finally took the plunge and send a check, and here I am.

Yep, I hate to give up that space with the ARE design, but so be it. I was going to put my electronics up there in the Callen design, inverter, stereo, maybe a flipout LCD tv/computer moniter, oh well.

Hey! Thanks for that! It does look just like a Callen. I'm sure it is weaker, being wood instead of steel, but it occurs to me maybe that's an okay thing, I wanted the strength of steel for a roof rack, but a homemade roofrack supported directy by the bed would allow for a weaker shell design.

At that price, it's almost disposable if it doesn't work out. Hmm. Very interesting, and BelAir is in my hometown, Garden Grove, I lived there for 20+ years, and have lots of friends and resources in that area.

We're thinking the same on the price point.
Also the site says "Custom made wood-n-aluminum shells". I don't know if that's wood frame / wood interior / aluminum skin OR aluminum frame / wood interior/ aluminum skin. I'm hoping the later. I'll send them an email now.

I love this old truck, I haven't had it for long, and I went through hell (Iowa in August) to get it.

My guess would be wood frame, aluminum skin. It's just too cheap to be an aluminum frame.

Hmm, maybe that would work for me, before I had this mindset of "no wood frames, it will flex too much, I need that beefy steel frame for that roof rack, I need that steel ladder to carry two 5-gallons cans of fun" but now I'm thinking of getting a rack like in the pic (link) below.

Hmm, so maybe I let the bed carry the weight of the rack, put the 10 gallons of fun on the bumper, and get a lighter duty wood framed shell, let it flex as it may, stay on top of the caulking, and at $1500, replace every 5-6 years or so, if I somehow manage to kill it by off roading through flex or something with my non-crawlin' straight-axle king of the fire roads pickup.

Okay, I'm ready to order a BelAir site unseen, but that didn't work out for me so good last time.

I wonder if BelAir makes the rack, and how tall can they go? I'd like 48" sidewalls with the rack clearing that.

I have to admire your truck. Mine is identical, (year, colour and all) but missing the topper and clearance lights. It'll turn 400,000km in the next week or so. Its no Toyota but it sure is reliable.
