Wavebreaker...

Now that you have had some time to play with it, how is it holding up? Is there anything you would change in the construction technique? Did the plywood thicknesses work, would you go thinner? Thicker? What about fiberglass? More? Less? Different? I am contemplating a similar technique but for a trailer about twice the size of yours (8'x6'x2') and am debating plywood thicknesses and where to apply what kind of cloth.

Mind you it would be of much simpler design than yours, not that I would prefer it but more to my ablility (I an a realist). You did a fantastic job.

Played with it very little got it done and winter had set in.

Changes: The plywood thickness is fine the only thing i would change would be to add a removable roof rack rather than building the standoffs.

The other thing i found being as the finished trailer is so light that the suspension (old front YJ springs) were to stiff trailer bounces to much. So its under the
Knife. I Contacted Timbren and had a custom 2000lb axle less system made so i have the option of adding electric brakes if i wish. Ill post pictures of the change.

The Fiberglass cloth was 1.5 ounce bi-directional. Mainly used for waterproofing and surfacing not really structural. It is sufficient for what i used it for. If you wanted added structure go to a 4 oz.

The other issue is the front of the trailer getting rock chipped going to add some thin Alum checker plate to the front area.

Cheers

I am interested in the Timbern Axleless system and have been thinking bout using it as well. After you get it installed I would be really interested in your comments of how it performs under different loads and different speeds/terrain. It looks like to works great at low speeds (<20mph) but I would like to know how it behaves driving down a dirt road at 40-50mph. Please keep us posted, if you would.

Very nice. My M101A2 build will draw much from this as I plan to have wooden modular prepacked slide ins made of wood depending on the purpose of the trip. It will be used for off road trips for camping, hunting small or large game, and long range SCUBA trips. Configurations will vary with the seasons too as sometimes a generator will be needed for A/C another time a compressor for SCUBA bottles. Trailer will at times have sleeping quarters at others sleeping quarters on vehicle and trailer used for large game transport. Tow vehicle will vary from Suburban, to 59 Willys Wagon or 53 Willys Pickup. So slide in wooden modules for them too.
Thank you,
Tom

Well i spent some time and finally changed out my suspension on the trailer. Need to get it buttoned up and out for a road test to see how everything is but 1 thing at a time.
Here's a few shots. Took about 4 hours to change it out but with work it took days :) This is a Timbren axle-less system. Custom made at timbren for this application, I wanted the option to add brakes to a 2000# axle so they changed out the spindle to a 3500# spindle on a 2000# suspension. I added the cross bar to help with side loading of larger tires its 2x2 1/4 inch wall.

This will be very interesting to watch. This is the first I have seen this suspension used.Make sure we get new side shots and let me know what you think about how the suspension works off road.
Beautiful trailer. I wouldn't want to be there the first time you scratch it. I would cry like a baby!

Interesting you couldn't get the YJ springs to ride smooth. By removing a few leafs and using shocks they rode very nice with my 1000 lb GVW Explorer Pod. The Timbren setup does look nice, be interested to see how it works out.

Decided to add some aluminum checker plate to the nose to stop rock chips.
