Need Help Deciding: Full Size or Mid/Compact?

So I've been driving myself crazy thinking of a future build. Historically I've added larger tires and mostly left my vehicles stock, and I've been relatively satisfied. That won't be the case with my next purpose-built ride.

I currently own a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 4-door long bed, 5-speed with V-8, leveling kit and a few other goodies. I absolutely love it, and it fits most of my needs perfectly (family camping trips with the camper, kid stuff, bicycles, kayaks, etc.) But...it's just too damned long for real off-road fun. I can't help but miss my old '92 Montero. Sure, it was underpowered and had been around the block a few times, but it was loads of fun in the boonies.

I'd like your advise on which way to go. The leading contenders right now are full-size Blazers (older style with solid front axle,) full-size Bronco, Ramcharger, Jeep Cherokee (boxy style,) Trooper, and....? I'll be buying on the cheep, so the full size wagons will be from the 70's to the early 90's, while the mid size units will be 80's to early 90's.

I lean toward the smaller 4-doors because I have 2 kids, but I'm not sold on them. Back in the day I owned a mid-80's Bazer with a diesel, and my folks have had an old Ramcharger around forever. It seems like the Ramcharger was top heavy, but it's been a long time since I've driven one.

What models am I overlooking? Can you guys offer some personal insight into the advantages/disadvantages to the models above and full vs. mid-size? My wife stays home with the kids, and isn't totally wild about my new project idea, so it has to be somewhat on the cheap. I can do most of the work myself, but aftermarket support/parts and junkyard availability is a consideration.

I live in the high desert of New Mexico close to the 4-Corners. This ride will see use in all 4 states, elevations from 4K - 11K feet. I appreciate all feedback!:)

Well I am partial to the old K5's since I have dreamed of owning another ever since mine was sold...but I'm fully aware of the fact that many have been beaten up on pretty hard.

An old K5 would surely need a lot of work and therefore a lot of money but they are a great platform for doing just about anything with.

I think I'd lean more toward an XJ then. Lots of parts available from aftermarket as well as junkyard finds. Plus you can't beat the solid front axle! Petersen's 4 Wheel and Off Road had a wonderful article that had tips on things to look for and avoid in these old XJ's since they are so popular now a days.

from what you described id say go with a cherokee. they can be found cheap, have a solid axle up front, great size for off-roading, there is a ton of aftermarket support for the xj as well.

Thanks for the input! I spent a little more time looking at various vehicles this weekend, but it didn't really help me make a decision. The guys over on the Jeep forum mentioned that I should look at the WJ (Grand Cherokee,) and I have to admit they are pretty nice inside. I still have concerns about all of the "modern" electrical and convenience features. I have a KISS attitude about this, but my wife would certainly appreciate some creature comforts.

Thoughts?

Bigger is always better. Our kids are getting bigger everyday. they need more room also. I sold 3/4 ton Dodge and am now looking at new crew cab 1 ton DRW. The Artic Fox should slide right in.:wings:

For a 25 to 30 year old vehicle, I'd recommend that you buy the truck in the best condition, with maintenance records, rather than focusing on a specific brand. Any of the vehicles you listed would make for years of family fun. You're keeping the full size pickup as well, right?

Yes, no plans of selling the truck. My wife floated the idea of selling her minivan an buying a newer SUV that I can mod, but I have reservations about that. Part of my madness is modding the heck out of whatever I buy, and constantly tinkering. Since I got out of motorcycling 1 1/2 years ago I've been going out of my mind. I need something to play with! If I have an old beater just for fun, it won't matter if I have it torn apart for a month. If it's here daily driver that won't be an option.
