Great thread. Has made it much (much) harder for me to decide. Like most, I want as much rear coverage as possible and would like a wall option as well.

Looking at the Ostrich Wing (https://www.ruggedbound.com/collections/frontpage/products/ostrich-wing-awning). Saw it mentioned once prior in this thread but it doesn't look like it made the list.

Oversight, Issue or "It's the same as..."? Anybody have any experience with it?

About a year ago, maybe more I was one click away from buying this. As I started to do my research on awnings I found Australia had kicked our but with higher quality products and options for overlanding. I found the 30 second awning in Aus. and am pretty sure this is the same unit. Liked it almost bought it but since I have a huge truck really want something with more coverage towards the front of the vehicle.

This is probably a dumb. Question but when mounting an awning on truck like a gladiator if the awning is say 96 inches. Do you have to have a front rack also? Gladiator has a 5 ft bed! If so what about differential movement from the bed to the truck body while off-road?

I think you are on to something to be concerned about. Maybe add a 96" bar to the rear rack so the awning is mounted on the same plane.

I have a F250 and I can tell you that the bed and cab do not move in total unison so if you mounted anything to both points you would have a problem at some point.

I believe there are smaller awnings for the shorter vehicles like yours. I think your choices are to mount it to what you got for a rack letting it overhang or find a shorter awning. You might want to focus on the jeep forum to ask those with the same vehicle what they do.

One other option: Mount a solid 8 foot bar(structure) to your rack and then mount the awning to that structure. I don't think the awnings are structurally rigid enough to hold up if 2 feet are hanging out in space. A separate structure would help this.

Most people push the awning forward so that it extends over the cab. This way when it unfolds it still covers the rear tailgate. It won’t work if you can’t mount the awning above the roof line though as it would block the door if it were lower.

Personally I’d love to see a 80”-90” square back 270. I think they are rare though.

Another option I’ve thought about is 2 separate awnings, one side, one rear, then a “corner” attachment to create a 270 like coverage.

Another option is a 180 that links up with a standard side or rear awning.
